본 연구의 목적은 A.A.
둘째, 본 연구는 A.A.

    Abstract

This study aimed to explore what is the nature of addictive thinking that the participants of A.A. program experienced during the first year of recovery and to find out what are the changing factors of the addictive thinking that prevent the relapse. In-depth interviews were conducted with alcoholics who have recovered without relapses for 1 year since they were discharged from hospitals and started to attend A.A. meetings. The participants also did 'the 100 meetings in 100 days', and experienced the 12 steps program with their sponsors. The data collected through 1-3 times of in-depth interviews with 11 participants for 2 months since May 2010 were qualitatively analyzed by applying the Colaizzi's phenomenological method. As a result, the 257 significant statements and constitutive meanings were saturated and 62 themes, 23 theme collections, and 9 categories were derived.
The results of analysis are summarized as follows. First, the addictive thinking that appeared in the early stage of recovery was 'sporadic thinking of drinking (Category 1)', 'self-isolation from reality(Category 2)', 'unstable emotional hangover(Category 3)', 'unrealistic thinking out of here-and-now(Category 4)', 'distorted stubbornness(Category 5)', and 'twisted invisible character with unsolved problems(Category 6)'. These categories of addictive thinking were classified into 'the explicit addictive thinking (Category 1)' that can directly lead to actions for drinking and 'the implicit addictive thinking(Category 2-Category 6)' which does not have any thought to drink on the surface but can lead to the explicit addictive thinking immediately right after being activated. Category 6 that cannot be recognized easily because it belongs to the implicit addictive thinking and that causes constant relapses is named 'deep addictive thinking'. 'Category 2 - Category 5' are named 'surface addictive thinking' because they cannot be easily recognized but can be aware through a deep self-overhaul. This study showed that the function of the addictive thinking that influences each other is to return the way of thinking to the old days under addiction. The addictive thinking also can hinder recovering alcoholics from thinking spiritually.
Second, the activation of implicit addictive thinking was experienced more strongly than that of explicit addictive thinking, which was one of characteristics of addictive thinking that appeared in the early stage of recovery. The reason is not only because the participants clearly recognized the reality that they are powerless over alcohol and that they can't be any more dependent on their family who used to permit alcoholics to drink , but also because they accepted seriously that they can relapse without internal changes and growth, not being satisfied with only abstinence.
Third, the characteristic of implicit addictive thinking experienced in the first year of recovery was based on the self-centeredness. The self-centeredness is the core cause of self-deception and defects of personality and the participants resist changes and try to maintain the old way of thinking on the basis of fear which is caused by being self-centered.
Fourth, this study shows that the addictive thinking participants experienced in the early stage of recovery can not be totally removed. This study found out that they keep themselves from relapse by reducing the addictive thinking through active and continuous self-reflections and honest confessions on cravings and defects of personality after making a comfort fellowship with A.A. meetings. They experienced changes of the structure of narcissistic self and grandiose self which are the existing distorted core beliefs by experiencing dramatic changes(the 2nd hitting bottom) of 'twisted invisible character which had not been solved yet(Category 6)', or, 'deep addictive thinking', through the 12-steps program. In the process, they were reducing the addictive thinking by recovering the cohesive self so that they can overcome the addictive self.
Fifth, the participants discovered 'the spirituality of fear' that helps them to accurately recognize the reality from their experiences of addictive thinking, 'the spirituality of surrender' that make them to give up the old way of thinking and to accept new points of view on life, and 'the spirituality of becoming' in which self-centeredness reduces and the spiritual thinking centering on the will of God appears and extends.
The greatest significance of this study is that first, it is attempted as a phenomenological study on the experiences of recovering alcoholics attending A.A. program from the viewpoint of 'addictive thinking'.
Second, this study focused on the first year of recovery which has the highest risk of relapse while previous studies were not interested in the period. This study showed that the intensive participation in A.A. program just for 1 year can be very effective in preventing the relapses caused by various addictive thinking and in establishing a new way of thinking and a new attitude of life in the early stage of recovery.
Third, the participants paid more attention to and deal with the implicit addictive thinking than the explicit addictive thinking during the early stage of recovery. This implies that addicts cannot accomplish their whole recovery by simply quitting drinking, or, abstinence. The reason why they did not experience the relapse is that they worked through the 'deep addictive thinking' in particular of implicit addictive thinking. The way of dealing with the deep addictive thinking was to constantly observe and confess the motivation of their behaviors after establishing a sense of safety and a sense of belonging to A.A. by intensively participating in the A.A. program. Going through this process, they got the new ability to introspect their thinking objectively. This study provides a practical possibility that churches can help Christians to
