This study's subjects are nurses at recuperation hospitals and centers in Miryang City, Gyeongsangnam-do. It aims to reveal the effects among the attitude of senior citizens about sex, the experience of the nurses to be sexually assaulted by the inpatients, their countermeasures against the sexual harassment, and their job satisfaction.
The following sums up the results from the study based on a questionnaire method:
1. Concerning the factors of countermeasures to sexual molestation, emotional attitude and the victim experience of serious sexual assault had a positive influence on the intervention of solution. Emotional attitude was positive and ethical attitude was negative about active avoidance. Only emotional attitude positively influenced no reaction with tolerance. No factors were significantly or systematically effective about restrictive intervention.
2. Regarding the factors of job satisfaction, ethical attitude and the victim experience of serious sexual assault had a negative influence on work-amount satisfaction. The experience of severe sexual assault was negatively affecting work-continuing satisfaction. But no factors were found to be influencing job-itself satisfaction.
3. The bigger the career of taking care of the old inpatients was, the more changes appeared in the factors of job satisfaction and countermeasures against sexual assault.
With a career less than a year, emotional and affirmative nurses tended to have more intervention of solution. More solution-oriented intervention, aggressive avoidance, and tolerant no-reaction led to the low satisfaction about the job itself.
With 1~3 years of career, positive ethical attitude brought about no reaction of tolerance. The more experience of light sexual molestation resulted in solution-oriented intervention. The victim experience of heavy and light sexual assault had negative effects on both work-amount and work-continuing satisfaction.
With 3~5 years of career, in particular, the victim experience of heavy sexual assault increased solution-oriented intervention and that experience worked negatively on job-itself satisfaction.
With more than 5 years of career, emotional attitude was positive and ethical attitude was negative regarding active avoidance. More experience of serious sexual harrassment was linked to more solution-oriented intervention. The experience of both heavy and light sexual assault had negative effects on the satisfaction of work amount.
When the nursing career surpassed 7 years, the effects of the factors of sexual assault experience on the factors of countermeasures and job satisfaction were gone. But, the factors of sex attitude by senior citizens were still affecting the factors of countermeasures.
In sum, in order to prevent the decrease of job satisfaction of the nurses at recuperation hospitals and centers owing to the experience of sexual assault by the old inpatients, we should know that the sensitive or decisive period is the senior-citizen-tending career between 1 and 3 years. There should be all-out preparatory education to obtain the proper types of countermeasures against sexual harassment.
