Korean Anti-Japanese Revolt in Java
during the Japanese Occupation
This thesis deals the anti-Japanese struggle by Korean Gunsok(軍屬, civilian workers in the military) who were forcibly mobilized to Java in Indonesia as guards of prisoners of war by Japanese Imperialism during the Pacific War. 1,408 0f Korean Gunsok came to Java in September, 1942. Since as early as June 1944, when the war situation of Japan was deteriorating, a group of Korean Gunsok at Jakarta POW camps were trying to form an anti-Japanese underground organization for Korean Independence. They, inspired by 'Cairo Declaration', were convinced that Korean Independence could be obtained when the Allied forces were victorious. Korean Gunsok established the ‘Young Man's Party for Korean Independence’(高麗獨立靑年黨, YPKI) 29 December 1944, and were preparing anti-Japanese and pro-Allied armed struggle.
4 January 1945, three members of YPKI raised an armed uprising at Ambarawa, central Java. 12 Japanese soldiers and civilians were killed in the uprising for 2 days. But the revolt was easily suppressed because of lack of the plan of struggle as well as the cooperation with anti-Japanese forces. After Ambarawa Revolt, YPKI was disclosed by Japanese MP. 10 key members of YPKI were brought to trial and sentenced 7 to 10 years imprisonment.
Even if Korean Gunsok were strangers in Indonesia, the anti-Japanese Ambarawa Revolt of YPKI was a noteworthy event in Java at that time. Ambarawa Revolt was the first armed rebellion occurred under the banner of political anti-Japan in Java. The Revolt shacked directly to the Japanese Military Administration, and disrupted the Japanese strategy of Java defense. Furthermore, Ambarawa Revolt broke out 40 days early before the anti-Japanese Blitar Revolt of Peta Army, which began 14 February 1945. Taking all these factors into consideration, one can argue that Ambarawa Revolt was a forerunner to Blitar Revolt.
