The science writing introduced in 2007 Educational Curriculum Revision is emerging as a learning measure that can improve students' advanced thinking ability including creative thinking and critical thinking. However, the newly introduced science writing lacks an effective teaching guide for school. Therefore, to maximize the effects of the writing class, an easy-to-use teaching guide of science writing for instructors and students needs to be prepared.
This study analyzed questions in the science writing proposed by the Educational Curriculum Revision as to identity characteristics of the questions, and on the basis of this result developed new science writing questions for students. To effectively teach the developed questions, this study then developed and applied a teaching guide of science writing by utilizing mind map in examining students interest in the class, change in their scientific attitude, and their perception of science writing.
For the objects of the analysis of the science writing questions, science textbooks of the first and second semesters of fourth graders in elementary school that adopted systematic science writing of 2007 Educational Curriculum Revision. As the result of analyzing the science writing questions suggested in the revised textbooks, 8 questions were demanding creative thinking, and logical thinking. However, each section had only one question, unable to cover all sectional study objectives. Thus, based on the analysis, questions that can cover all study contents and objectives of each subsection were additionally developed. The developed questions were to demand advanced thinking abilities such as creative, and logical thinking.
Then, a teaching guide to effectively teach science writing was developed. It was designed for progressive learning: before writing, it uses the mind map technique to select a writing subject, then prepare an outline, and then proceed to writing based on the mind map.
The in-class study was conducted on four classes of fourth graders in W Elementary School in Seoul (47 students in 2 experimental classes, 47 students in 2 comparison classes). For the experimental group, the science writing questions and teaching guide developed in this study were applied to their 13 trials of science writing, and the comparison group carried out the writing without any teaching guide.
The experimental group students who adopted the teaching guide of science writing with mind map showed more positive effects in self-confidence and satisfaction areas among the interest areas, compared with the comparison group students. In the area of scientific attitude, they displayed positive effects in open-mindedness and cooperation. Also, a survey found that the pressure of science writing diminished among the students.
Therefore, the analysis showed that learning science writing that persistently adopts the teaching guide of science writing with mind map produces positive effects on students' science class.
