The purpose of this study was to develop the Employment Stress Scale(ESS), which measured the degree of the employment stress of the university students. To achieve this purpose, a rating process by experts yielded 103 items from previous studies and measuring instruments. Then 39 items were selected for futher study. Four hundred sixty seven university students were selected to participate in this study. The results of this study were as follows: First, the Employment Stress Scale(ESS) with 39 items related to the contents about employment stress was developed. To examine internal consistency and split-half reliability, data were collected from samples of 467 university students, and to verify 4-week test-retest reliability, data were collected from samples of 113 university students. The result showed high internal consistency(Cronbach's α = .915), split-half reliability(r = .882), and test-retest reliability(r = .973). Therefore, the consistency of the scale was satisfactory. Second, the four factors to the scale have been extracted from the factor analysis. The four factors were consisted of 'cognition(7 items)', 'emotion(8 items)', 'behaviour(12 items)', 'somatization(12 items)'. The factor structure well reflected characteristic of the employment stress of the Korean university students.
