Recently, with economical growth, the quality of life has been improved, and the interest and consumptive desire of culture and art have expanded, thus resulting in the quantitative and qualitative growth of performance market. In the future, the demand for performance will increase continuously. In this vein, it is necessary to carry out a variety of studies on the market of performance from a variety of perspectives.
The purpose of this study was to examine consumers' behaviors of consumption, selective factors and attitudes toward performance seeing, and satisfaction with it, different from preceding studies regarding the general aspects of performing art. Also, through a questionnaire survey in the study, dance consumers' characteristics are grasped concretely, and by doing so, the researcher grope after strategies to increase dance organizations' communication with audience, and try to find out a more systematic marketing technique, thus presenting basic data for the activation of dance performance.
Before drawing a conclusion, in order to understand dance performance based on theoretical backgrounds, the conception and factors of dance performance, the consumption and characteristic of dance performance, the selective factors of dance performance, and consumers' attitudes and satisfaction with dance performance were examined.
Moreover, in order to work out study questions, such preceding studies as the one by Kim Myeong-hi (2003), the one by Kim So-yeong and others (2003), the one by Do Ji-hye (2004) and the one by Son Min-ho (2004) were examined. Based on theoretical backgrounds and preceding studies, following three study questions were established:
Study question 1: 'What is dance performance audience's consumption behavior of performance?' Study question 2: 'What is the influence of dance performance consumers' selective factors of performance upon their attitudes toward performance?' Study question 3: 'What is the influence of dance performance consumers' selective factors of performance upon their satisfaction with performance?' A self-reporting online questionnaire survey of 220 men and women, who were older than 20 years of age and had the experience of seeing dance performance, was carried out over the period from May 7 to 15, 2011. Collected data of 191 respondents were statistically processed with the SPSS 16.0 statistical analytic program, except unfaithful responses. In order to examine selective factors of dance performance, factor analysis was carried out. For examination of the attitudes and satisfaction with performance according to selective factors of performance, correlation analysis was carried out. And in order to examine the influence of selective factors of performance upon the attitudes and satisfaction with performance, regression analysis was carried out.
Study findings are as follows:
As for the study question 1, consumers had great interest and seeing intention of art in general, but the accessibility to art was still unsatisfactory and the perception and reliability of performance seeing were also low, thus having insufficient information and knowledge on dance performance. So they got highly reliable information from acquaintances around who had great knowledge on dance performance and then saw it.
As for the study question 2, the researcher viewed many selective items drawn from the existing literature as consumers' recognized characteristics and then carried out factor analysis on 17 items, thus extracting three factors, such as 'external factor of performance', 'producer and dancer factor' and 'performance assessment factor' and using them as independent variables. The results of regression analysis on the three selective factors of performance, and seeing attitudes of performance showed that the total persuasive power was 20%, and the producer and dancer factor and the performance assessment factor had positive influence upon performance seeing attitudes. Study findings showed that when producer and dancer factor were positive, it had positive influence upon seeing attitudes of performance. In addition, when performance assessment was positive, it had positive influence upon seeing attitudes of performance. However, external factor of performance had no significant influence upon seeing attitudes of performance. This finding seemingly shows the fact that audience wants to improve the contents, quality and assessment of performance, rather than other external factors, and their demand level of dance itself was very high.
As for the study question 3, the total persuasive power was 26% and the external factor of performance, producer and dancer factor and performance assessment factor had positive influence upon satisfaction with performance. Study findings showed that when external factor of performance, producer and dancer factor and performance assessment factor were positive, satisfaction with performance was very high. Different from the study question 2, external factor of performance must be taken into account in the improvement of satisfaction with performance.
This study had following limitations. Study subjects could not be generalized into all the audience who visiting dance performance theaters nationwide. Many did not respond to online questionnaire survey and the rate of collection was also low. Since the investigator was dance major, the persons who were related to the department of dance could be included in this study. Besides, the period of experience of dance performance for the questionnaire survey was far broader; therefore, it could cause various errors, when respondents' perception of dance performance was low, or they could not remember dance performance well, or they could not distinguish well dance performance from other fusion genres. The investigator hopes future studies will set accurate time points and contents for the establishment of period and performance, thus collecting highly persuasive data. Finally, there could be respondents' personal difference and prejudice-oriented errors in the responses.
