When enterprises or marketers communicate the information about products or services, they utilize the mass communication through which they can easily manage, control and deliver information. WOM(Word of Mouth) Communication, however, isn't easy for enterprises or marketers to have access to because they can't directly intervene in WOM Communication, or can't directly manage or control it due to various variables such as exchange of information among consumers, creation of new information, and psychological state of consumers.
This study investigated how WOM Communication at the individual level rather than aggregate level leads to what purchase results in the process of product selection depending on the levels of product involvement and the product types, based on the Construal Level Theory. This Construal Level Theory expands the theoretical horizons into the concept of Psychological Distance which includes all the distances of Temporal Distance, Spatial Distance, and Social Distance. This study examined how the information about products and services results in what purchase choices depending on the differences of Psychological Distance across the levels of involvement and the product types. Thus we examined the product choice results across 4 types, which were high involvement-utilitarian product, high involvement -hedonic product, low involvement-utilitarian product, and low involvement -hedonic product.
Using a questionnaire designed to test the hypotheses presented in this study, we examined 68 graduate business students at a university in Seoul (male : 33, female : 35). The experiment had a two (Self-Construal : (short psychological distance) some familiar faces around vs. (far psychological distance) the third persons ) × two (levels of involvement : high involvement vs. low involvement) × two (product types : utilitarian product vs. hedonic product) design. This study did the analysis using PASW Statistics 18, a kind of statistical package program, to test product choice intention and its reliability depending on the psychological distance, the levels of product involvement, the product types, and the WOM information obtained from WOM information source. To test the operationalization of the psychological distances of both some familiar faces around and the third persons, we conducted t-test, and the result showed that the respondents recognized the differences between them as expected.(some familiar faces around(5.81) and the third persons(3.93); t=10.42, p<0.01)

These findings about the hypotheses suggest several points from the marketing perspective (for Korean consumers).
First, the cultural characteristics of Korean people also seem to have a strong effect in terms of psychological distance. General expectations were that as for high involvement-utilitarian products, consumers will probably depend more on the information from more people, because they might think it would be more objective. But, in fact, the result showed that they trust more and are influenced more by the WOM opinions of family members or friends with short psychological distance. That means Korean culture is characterized by strong trust in "Family members", or "Us", and this trust has more influence than objective information.
Second, when Korean consumers get negative WOM information from family members or friends with short psychological distance, then it is more likely that the impact and strength of the negative effect will be more powerful than that of the positive one. Especially, in case where the negative WOM information is from the direct experience of a product of the persons with short psychological distance, the probability of choosing that product will be far lower regardless of level of product involvement or product types.
Third, in the questionnaire, we described subjects with far psychological distance as "nonmembers of a club on the internet" or something like that, and the result of the questionnaire shows that Korean consumers have little trust in WOM information spreading on the internet which is not from a club they don't join in as a regular member because they feel those information very far in terms of psychological distance, while they, to some degree, trust the WOM information from the internet club they are joining in as a full member.
