The educational method by way of imitation and observational learning does not have to be studied by academic theory or citing other people's words, but rather it may be done through the direct observation of social and organizational life. People are well aware of the positive effects of 'leading by example,' and they think this is a necessary characteristic in leaders, but because new knowledge and techniques in organization management arise, and because it has become a overly common and universal concept, people overlook it as something simple and thus I began to question if we don't consider the practical, strategic methods of application of leading by example. This study accounts the source of 'leading by example' to be the team leader's 'personality trait,' and the purpose of this study is to provide positive proof of this relationship through close examination. New scientific suggestion was made on the concept of leading by example, and questions on subsequent research was presented. The characteristics of this study are as follows.
First, the factors for leading by example were categorized into 'act,' 'vanguard,' and 'righteousness,' and 'act' and 'vanguard' were hypothesized as premise to recognition of leading by example. Precedent studies categorized 'normative practicality' and 'sacrifice spirit' as factors for leading by example, but this study considered 'sacrifice spirit' to be a subordinate concept to 'righteousness,' and subdivision of 'righteousness' was excluded from this study. 'Sacrifice spirit' may be viewed as subordinate concept to 'righteousness' and also as a factor which enhances leading by example.
Second, instead of employing self-rating method which has been used in domestic research up till now on personality and duty performance, 'ratings by peer' method was enforced.
Third, leading by example was approached as a concept which includes task performance as well as non-task performance.
This research targeted a total of 8 corporations of 3 different industries in which team system is activated; IT industry, finance, and distribution?Eservice industry. The results of survey answers from 134 participants, influence on leading by example was in the order of conscientiousness(??=.433, p=.000), openness(??=.369, p=.000), agreeableness(??=.303, p=.000).
Extraversion showed insignificant to leading by example, differing from domestic studies on personality and task performance. This may be due to the conceptual difference of precedent task?Enon-task studies, or the difference may generate from the difference in rating method or study subjects.
In conclusion, this study shows that there are many limitations to the concept and research methods of leading by example, but through succeeding in-depth studies leading by example may be practically and strategically applied as a countermeasure to change.
