There have been many studies representing intellectual structures of a scholarly field in Informetrics. Author Co-citation Analysis(ACA) technique has been widely used as a means of intellectual structure analysis, but this technique has some limitations on analyzing current research trends in Korea. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to overcome those limitations of ACA by using Author Bibliographic Coupling Analysis(ABCA) technique and represents intellectual structure reflecting current research trends in the field of Korea Electrical Engineering.
Bibliographies and references on each article were collected and analyzed from The transactions of KIEE and Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology, published from 2005 to 2009. Fifty-one authors with contribution frequencies of 12 or higher were selected. Author's profile matrix, cosine similarity matrix and Pearson's correlation coefficient matrix were constructed.
Multi-Dimensional Scaling(MDS) analysis was used to map authors in two-dimensional space and clustering analysis was used to examine core subject areas and indicated author clusters onto MDS map. Additionally, Pathfinder network(PFNET) was applied to visualize intellectual interchanges among authors and Parallel Nearest Neighbor Clustering(PNNC) was applied to make clusters. The centrality analysis in the weighted networks was used to find out the top global centrality author and the top local centrality author.
The results of intellectual structure analysis in the field of Electrical engineering are as follows.
First, the results of MDS analysis has shown authors were mapped in two-dimensional space based on the correlation among authors.
Second, in two-dimensional space, authors were arranged along a horizontal axis reflecting a research subject and a vertical axis reflecting a research methodology.
Third, the result of cluster analysis has shown 11 author clusters reflecting core subject areas. The name of these clusters are Electric power economy, Distribution automation system, Electric power system protection, Operations of electrical power equipment, HVDC, Analysis of electrical power equipment, Power electronics/Electronic materials, Discharge/High voltage/Plasma, Electrical power equipment, Electric machines, and Numerical analysis of electrical power.
Fourth, 11 core subject areas by cluster analysis were compared to subject areas reflected in the research area classified table. The comparing result has shown that 11 core subject areas are main research areas of Electrical Engineering field reflected current research trends.
Fifth, The result of intellectual structure analysis by PFNET & PNNC has shown 10 author clusters reflecting core subject areas. The name of these clusters are Electric power economy, Distribution automation system, Electric power system protection, HVDC, Analysis of electrical power equipment, Operations of electrical power equipment/Electric machines/Power electronics Electronic materials, Discharge/High voltage/Plasma, Electrical power equipment, and Numerical analysis of electrical power.
Sixth, intellectual structure by MDS & cluster analysis was not significantly different from that by PFNET & PNNC analysis.
The results of intellectual interchanges among Electrical engineering authors are as follows.
First, the result of authors' institutional affiliation network mapping has shown close correlation between author's institutional affiliation and clustering trends of core subject areas.
Second, the result of centrality analysis in the weighted networks has shown that the top author of global centrality who is the most influential people in Electrical Engineering field is Kim, Jae-Chul, followed by Kim, Chul-Hwan, Park, Jong-Bae, Park, Jong-Keun, Park, June-Ho, Shin, Joong-Rin, Rhee, Sang-Bong, Kim, Jin-Ho, Lee, Jong-Beom, Lee, Seung-Jae, etc.
Third, the result of centrality analysis in the weighted networks has shown that the top author of local centrality who is the most influential people in one's core subject area is Kwon, Byung-Il, follwed by Rhee, Sang-Bong, Kim, Bal-Ho, Jung, Chae-Kyun, etc.
Fourth, the dispersal type graph was drawn to identify author's network centrality. The local centrality was plotted along the X-axis, and the global centrality was plotted along the Y-axis. The authors having both high global centrality value and high local centrality value were not shown in the graph. Most authors had both low-valued global and local centrality.
The result of intellectual structure by ABCA reflected current research trends in the Korea electrical engineering field. ABCA could be usefully used in the field of scientific and technical field like this. The results of this study could be utilized in the libraries for collection development and advanced information service. Besides, it could help electro-technicians who want to identify current research trend and author network.
