This study is intended to clarify the characteristics of Eastern area of Jeonnam province around 1st through 4th centuries. Eastern area of Jeonnam, the target area of the this study, is located in the center of southern Korean peninsula. However, High mountains from Bakdoodaegan and Honamjeongmaek blocked communication and trade with both western area of Jeonnam and western area of Kyungnam. Due to this geological reasons, already established traditions were well maintained. Accordingly when they had to introduce other cultures, it was always based on the established tradition. In addition, there are some intra-area difference according to whether it belongs to more accessible area or not. This difference enable us to classify this areas into Koheung peninsula area, Bosunggang area, Mid-Seomjingang area, and Eastern coast area.
In terms of dwelling sites layout, Koheung peninsula area, which is near to western area of Jeonnam, completed shifting to square type dwelling sites layout. In the 1st phase, circular dwelling sites layout is prominent which gave the way into square type dwelling sites layout from 2nd phase. In I․II pahse, layout with both circular and square type qualities appeared. In this pahse, square type layout with B1 fireplace which can be found in circular dwelling sites layout illustrating transitional phenomena. In the III phase, only square type dwelling sites layouts are found. Various clay pots were found among relics of western area of Jeonnam. In the IV phase, relics from Gaya are found maintaining the phenomena of III phase. In terms of burying, wooden-coffin tomb and ditch around wooden-coffin tomb with iron artifacts and Gaya relics.
dwelling sites layout of Bosunggang area is similar to Goheung peninsula. Shift to circular and square type layout is found and transitional phenomena is similar. However, III phase is somewhat different from Goheung peninsula. still circular dwelling sites layout and B1 fireplace are found. Relics of western area of kyungnam artifacts are excavated which draws our attention to relation with western area of kyungnam. In IV phase only square type dwelling sites layout is found and rarely relics of Gaya are excavated. It is presumed that Bosunggan area, which is located inland, did not have chance to trade with Haman and Gimhae. However, ditch around wooden-coffin tomb, Gaya artifacts are excavated showing artifacts of Gaya were used as a costly grave goods.
In Mid-Seomjingang area, circular and square type dwelling sites layouts coexist in II phase. However, circular dwelling sites layout is dominant. track type and wall-pillar type dwelling sites(벽주공식주거지) layout shows similarity with western area of Kyungnma. III phase is similar to II phase in that circular and square type dwelling sites layouts coexist with circular dwelling sites layout dominant. Both western area of Kyungnam and western area of Jeonnam artifacts are excavated showing the coexistence of two cultures. In IV phase, both circular and square type dwelling sites layouts are found. However, square type dwelling sites layout is dominant from this phase. Its geographical inland location shows scanty relics from Gaya.
In eastern coast area, fireplace of I․III phase are all B1 except one. In I phase, mostly circular dwelling sites layouts are found which gives way to circular dwelling sites layout in II phase. In the III phase, only circular dwelling sites layout are found and kinds of relics are more simple compared with 3 other areas. In IV phase, square type dwelling sites layout is found with more various kinds of relics excavated. Especially a lot of relics of Gaya shows that Gimhae and Haman used the marine routes.
