This study purposed to examine how story making activity using fairy tale books affects young children’s emotional recognition (self‐awareness, self‐control, other‐awareness, and other‐control) and their prosocial behavior (leadership, helping, communication, initiative consideration, approaching, sharing, and empathy and emotional control). For this purpose, we set research questions as follows.
Question 1: What effect does story making activity using fairy tale books have on young children’s emotional recognition?
Question 2: What effect does story making activity using fairy tale books have on young children’s prosocial behavior?
Question 3: Is there significant difference in the improvement of young children’s emotional recognition resulting from story making activity using fairy tale books according to gender?
Question 4: Is there significant difference in the improvement of young children’s prosocial behavior resulting from story making activity using fairy tale books according to gender?
The subjects of this study were 40 five‐year‐old children sampled from two child-care centers in Gwang-ju Metropolitan City. They were divided into an experimental group with children from C Child-care Center (12 males and 8 females), which had story making activity using fairy tale books, and a control group with children from K Child-care Center (12 males and 8 females), for which only fairy tale books were read. The experimental and control groups were homogeneous in terms of parents’ occupation, economic level, living environment, and cultural experience, and their child-care centers were both workplace child-care centers operated in a similar way. The experimental group had story making activity using fairy tales for 6 weeks and twice a week, and the control group were read fairy tales without story making activity. The pretest was performed to the children of the two groups before story making activity using fairy tales was started. The post-test was performed to the child-cren of the two groups after 6 weeks’ story making activity using fairy tales for improving the experimental group child-cren’s emotional recognition and prosocial behavior. In the pretest, no statistically significant difference was observed in emotional intelligence and prosocial behavior between the experimental group and the control group. Data were analyzed through post‐test.
The results of this study obtained from the research procedure above are as follows.
First, after the story making activity using fairy tale books, the experimental group children showed significant difference from the control group in recognizing their own emotion accurately, understanding others’ emotion, expressing emotion clearly, and distinguishing expressed emotions.
Second, after story making activity using fairy tale books, the experimental group children showed statistically significant difference from the control group in their improvement in the sub‐factors of prosocial behavior, that is, leadership, communication, initiative consideration, approaching, sharing, and empathy and emotional control.
Third, improvement in emotional recognition resulting from story making activity using fairy tale books was not significantly different between male and female children.
Fourth, improvement in prosocial behavior resulting from story making activity using fairy tale books was not significantly different between male and female children.
These results suggest that the story making activity using fairy tale books has a positive effect in improving in young children’s emotional recognition and prosocial behavior. This result is considered meaningful in setting desirable directions and making teaching plans for improving young children’s emotional recognition and prosocial behavior in the field of early childhood education.
