The study aimed to examine how mother-teacher relationship impacts on child-teacher relationship and child's adaptation to childcare center.
This study addresses the study questions as follows:
1. How is mother-teacher relationship, child-teacher relationship, and child's adaptation to childcare center depending on mother's attributes such as age, educational attainment, and employment?
2. How is the relationship among mother-teacher relationship, child-teacher relationship, and child's adaptation to childcare center?
The subjects of this study were 191 children of four and five years old from 11 childcare centers in Gwangju Metropolitan City, and their mothers and their 14 teachers in charge. A questionnaire of mother-teacher relationship scale, modified and supplemented by Lee, Chanjoo(2002), was used to examine mother's understanding of mother-teacher relationship. A questionnaire of student-teacher relationship scale (STRS), developed by Pianta(1991) and adapted by Lee, Jinsuk (2001), was used to examine child-teacher relationship, A questionnaire of child's adaptation behavior in a child education center by Oh, Jaeyeon(2006) was used to measure child's adaptation to childcare center. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS 12.0 program.
The results of the study are summarized as follows.
First, mother-teacher relationship, child-teacher relationship, and child's adaptation to childcare center depending on mother's characteristics such as age, educational attainment, and employment, are as follows. As for mother-teacher relationship depending on mother's attributes, it showed no significant difference depending on mother's age or employment, whereas it was recognized that more educated mothers had more positive relationship with teachers than less educated mothers. As for child-teacher relationship depending on mother's attributes, it showed no significant difference depending on mother's age or educational attainment, whereas it was shown that working mother's child had more conflict relationship with teacher than non-working mother's child. As for child‘s adaptation to childcare center depending on mother's attributes, it showed no significant difference depending on mother's age or educational attainment, whereas it was shown that working mother's child had more difficulty in adapting to childcare center than non-working mother's child.
Second, the relationship among mother-teacher relationship, child-teacher relationship, and child's adaptation to childcare center was shown as follows. Although no significant correlation was not found between mother-teacher and child-teacher relationship in general, it was shown that the less close relationship between mother and teacher, the more conflict between the child and teacher. Although no significant correlation was not found between mother-teacher and child's adaptation to childcare center in general, it was shown that the less common value mother and teacher share, the more possibly the child shows delinquency (personal or social) in the childcare center. Also, a significant correlation was shown between child-teacher relationship and child's adaptation to childcare center in general, the less close relationship and the more conflict or dependence between the child and teacher, the more possibly the child show difficulty in adapting to the childcare center.
In conclusion, considering mother-teacher relationship has much impact on the child, not only close cooperation and effort, but also a systematic relevant education are necessary for forming a positive relationship between mother and teacher.
