The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of teaching profession ethics on job satisfaction in kindergarten and daycare center teachers, thus contributing to find ways for enhancement of kindergarten and daycare center teachers', positive ethical standards, job satisfaction and self-esteem. For the study 330 early childhood teachers from kindergartens and private daycare centers in Osan-si area participated in the survey.
The results of the study are as follows.
First, the mean of overall teaching profession ethics of kindergarten and daycare center teachers was 3.74 points, ethics about children 3.78, ethics about the family of a child 3.92, ethics on colleagues and ethics about the community 3.48. The results show that kindergarten and daycare center teachers' scores on ethics about the family of a child was the highest and ethics about the community the lowest.
The analysis result on the teaching profession ethics scores depending on demographical factors - type of institution, marriage status, age, position, monthly income - was statistically significant. In work experience, only ethics about children showed significantly different. There was no difference found in ethics about family of a child, colleagues and community.
Second, kindergarten and daycare center teachers overall job satisfaction score mean was 3.59, relationship with colleagues 3.97, relationship with the principle 3.88, working environment 3.36, characteristics of the job itself 3.43 and compensation and promotion 3.29. Thus scores in relationship with colleagues showed the highest satisfaction scores and compensation and promotion the lowest scores. The analysis result of difference depending on demographical factors did not show any statistical significance.
Third, to analyze the effects of teaching profession ethics on job satisfaction in kindergarten and daycare center teachers, we conducted multiple-regression. In demographical factors position and monthly income showed significant effects on job satisfaction. In ethical factors ethics on children, about the family and about colleagues showed significant effects on job satisfaction but ethics about the community did not show any significant effects.
As results the teaching profession ethics of kindergarten and daycare center teachers and their job satisfaction was operationally different but showed intimate relationship. Teachers with high ethic scores show high job satisfaction. This could mean that if kindergarten and daycare center teachers have high ethical standards for the teaching profession then their job satisfaction also may be high. Thus, in order to enhance job satisfaction of kindergarten and daycare center teachers we need to support desirable and positive teaching profession ethics of teachers.
Suggestions for enhancing teaching profession ethics and job satisfaction in kindergarten and daycare center teachers based on the study results are as follows.
First, kindergarten and daycare center teachers should be given the opportunity for enrolling in higher education or re-education programs in order to perform their role as an ethical, intellectual, emotional, social and functional education experts in the field.
Second, socio-economical groundwork needs to be established so that kindergarten and daycare center teachers can have pride about their status as a professional.
Finally, the child's education and social care is now becoming a nation wide, whole society issue. Thus, the government, education institutions and the community should take responsibility in enhancing job satisfaction and teaching profession ethics of kindergarten and daycare center teachers. Also the growth of training institutions for kindergarten and daycare center teachers in it's quantity as well as quality should be taken into consideration.
