The purpose of this research is to study the relationship between playfulness of children and their social competence so as to identify how plays during the childhood affect the development of social competence of children .
For the attainment of objectives of this study following topics for researches are laid out:
1. How does the preschoolers' playfulness, is there any difference in the extent of playfulness according to genders and age of preschoolers?
2. How does the social skills of infants , is there any difference in the extent of playfulness according to genders and age of preschoolers?
3. Is there any relationship between preschoolers' playfulness and social skills of infants?
4. Is there any affects in the extent of social skills of infants according to preschoolers playfulness?
The subjects of this study, 3 years old, 4 years old, 5 years old children 297 people (boys 140, girls 157) running to two childcare and two kindergarten located to Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, and 3 weeks of the study period.
Playfulness Measurement Tool,' playfulness appraisal tool CPS(Children's Playfulness Scale)' developed by Barnett(1991) was used.
Preschoolers' playfulness evaluation tool is composed of five kinds of sub-categories those five sub-categories are physical spontaneity, social spontaneity, cognitive spontaneity, expression of joy, a sense of humor.
In order to measure social skills of infants, ISCS(Iowa Social Competence Scale: Preschool Form)questionnaire which developed by Pease and modified the translation by Songnari (2001) was used.
ISCS was inherently all composed by 34 question items which include
5 factors :
social activator, hypersensitive, teassurance, leadership, uncooperative. SongNaRi removed uncooperative factors under this, and executed factors analysis, and did reconstruction to suitable question items to infants of our country.
A social skills evaluation questionnaire consists of four sub-factors, and every each question item Likert five-point criteria was used for expression.
According to processing the collected data, statistical analysis technique was used and executed Frequency Analysis to major background variables for examine the general characteristics of the subjects, and the average and standard deviation were calculated to recognize the difference between playfulness and social skills, and independent T-test and F-test executed to recognize the difference between the groups.
The next, there executed Pearson's Product-Moment Analysis in order to recognize relationships between playfulness and social skills, and executed Multiple Regression Analysis in order to recognize any affects in the extent of social skills of infants according to preschoolers playfulness sub-factors.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows.
The first, preschoolers' playfulness level according to gender, boys were higher than boys, and sub-components appeared among the most physical spontaneity
There are expressed pleasure expression, social spontaneity, a sense of humor, cognitive spontaneity
All playfulness according to age was high 4 years old, 5 years old, 3 years old, in order, but appeared no significant difference
The second. preschoolers' social skills according to gender a girl is higher a little than a boy, but did not differ significantly, and social skills according to age appeared no significant difference.
The third, the relationship between preschoolers' playfulness and social skills of infants appear positive correlation.
All playfulness appeared in leadership, reliability, competence and positive correlation, but nonhypersensitive appeared with the fact that has the relationship of inverse correlation.
The fourth, preschoolers' playfulness is significantly affected to whole social skills and the social sub-factor.
Social spontaneity was the largest part of social skills influences.
According to the results of this study, the relationship between playfulness and social skills is meaningful.
Therefore, based on this theory, the research of the play and social skills, should be more systematic and more diverse so the in-depth research can be more active which should be helpful to understand the relationship between preschoolers' playfulness and social skills of infants.
