The study aims to identify how children's fictional narratives occur in the daily activities of kindergarten and specifically suggest teacher's interaction strategies to help the configuration and the development of children's fictional narratives. As the problems of the study to examine children's fictional narratives that occur in various activities of the daily activities of kindergarten, following problems have been established.
1. How do children's fictional narratives occur in the daily
activities of kindergarten and what is the characteristics of the structure?
2. What is teacher's interaction strategy to help children's fictional narratives and what is the subsequent transition process of children's fictional narratives?
For this, total 204 series of fictional narrative data have been collected through participation observation from 20th Feb 2007 till 30th Nov 2007, by targeting total 4 children, 1 male and 1 female child from the class for 4-year-old child and 5-year-child, respectively in Purunhanul kindergarten located in Seoul city. In order to reduce the errors that may incur in case of the data collection through participation observation and to collect the data, that is difficult to collect, such as the thought and the intentions of the participants, the triangulation suggested by Denzin(1978) was used. With respect to triangulation, participation observation, in-depth interviews and various documents, were used. The data collected in this ways, have been analyzed by referring to the grounded theory of Strauss and Corbin (1994). As a result, following results have been derived.
The results with respect to the problems of study are as follows.
1. The occurrence of children's fictional narratives and its structural characteristics.
Children configureded fictional narratives through various plays the daily activities of kindergarten and the teachers' planned classes, and then showed structural characteristics, accordingly.
First, fictional narratives often occurred in the process of children' plays with story book containing fictional story subject materials, stick fairy tale, cotton flannel board fairy tale and picture materials. In fairy tale and picture materials, various fictional subject materials and contents were suggested and these became important clues to the background, the characters and the configuration of story line. In other words, children showed the characteristics with goal based and logical narrative structure that they tended to create problematic events, according to the scenes depicted in this picture materials, the characteristics and the behavioral changes of characters or solve the problems. Also, children established various backgrounds and characters by using of controllable fairy tale materials such as cotton flannel board fairy tale and stick fairy tale, and often configured interesting fictional narratives that contained various components.
As above, picture books and fairy tale materials suggested the clues, such as the problem that background characteristics of fictional narratives met with characters and the goal based behaviors, so they included various narrative components also helped maintaining the logical flow of story line.
Second, the experiences to listen to the fictional narratives from teachers and peers, in the daily activities of kindergarten served as a momentum so that children had interests in that and participated themselves in the configuration activities. Children, sometimes, listened to the fictional narratives from the teachers and peers and they, themselves, configured fictional narratives extemporaneously and narrated them. At this time, children could obtain various fictional subject matters, characters, background, commentaries, and expression of lines, contained in the narratives that teachers and peers narrated. In other words, the interests and the attentions of children grew through the narrative stimulation of teachers and peers and it served as a momentum, so that children could obtain the conceptual knowledge about various fictional subjects and the method to configure story line, contained in the fictional narratives of the others. Also, children often included logical cohesion devices, direct and indirect lines, and sound effects, so thats the other could understand them easily. In parallel, they appropriately included the configuration elements, such as various events, high points, surprise, and the expression of emphasis, in order to configure and deliver pleasant and interesting story line.
Third, children played by making various structures through the use of blocs and controllable toys in the daily activities, and in this process of configuration play, fictional narratives sometimes occurred. Children set the configuration toys, completed in the activities of configuration plays as characters or backgrounds and then configured the movement and the change of configuration toys as fictional narratives. In other words, depending on the characteristics and the types of the structures that children made, the subjects of narratives, backgrounds and characters were established and story line was configured in a form that the intentions and the behaviors of characters, have been expressed to create problematic events and solve the problems. At this time, children showed the structural characteristics that the narrative structure enumerated the behaviors and the movement of characters in parallel, for the explanation, because children configured story line according to the movem
