The purposes of this study was to find out the relationship between mother’s positive emotional expressiveness and children’s playfulness, the relationship between mother’s positive emotional expressiveness and children’s social competence and the relationship between children’s playfulness and social competence.
For the purposes, following research questions were set up.
1. What is the relationship between mother’s positive emotional expressiveness and children’s playfulness?
2. What is the relationship between mother’s positive emotional expressiveness and children’s social competence?
3. What is the relationship between children’s playfulness and social competence?
The subjects of this study were 403 children who were 3-5 years old and attending early childhood education institutions (nursery, kindergarten) and their mothers in Daegu, Gyeongbuk province, and Gyeongnam province. The questionnaire of their mothers and their teachers was conducted.
In this study, to understand the mother’s positive emotional expression, ‘Mother’s Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire’ was used. Seo Hye-rin adapted Halberstadt (1986)’s ‘Self-Expressiveness in the Family Questionnaire (SEFQ)’ to ‘Mother’s Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire’. For children’s playfulness, ‘Children’s Playfulness Scale, CPS’ was used, which was developed by Barnett (1990, 1991) and adapted by Yoo Ae-yeol(1994). For children’s social competence, ‘Early Children’s Social Competence Assessment Tools for Teacher’ was used, which was developed by Lee Hye-won(2005).
In data analysis, to find out the relationships among mother’s positive emotional expressiveness, children’s playfulness and children’s social competence, a correction analysis, a simple regression analysis and a multiple regression analysis between key variables were performed for the data analysis from the questionnaires. In the data processing, correlation coefficient and regression coefficient by valuables were checked by using SPSS 15.0 for Window and then it was found to be significant statistically in the significance level 0.5 through the Enter method and statistical significance of regression coefficient was verified.
The results of this study can be summarized as below.
First, there was a positive correlation between mother’s positive emotional expressiveness and children’s playfulness and mother’s positive emotional expression has a meaningful effect on the expression of pleasure which is a sub factor of children’s playfulness.
Second, there was a positive correlation between mother’s positive emotional expressiveness and children’s social competence. Mother’s positive emotional expressiveness has a great effect on the emotional regulation and understanding of social norms which are sub factors of children’s social competence.

Social spontaneity, cognitive spontaneity and expression of pleasure which are sub factors of playfulness have a positive effect on social competence.
