This thesis deals with genre formation and structural features of comedy films in the late 1950s and analyzes various layers of factors which had affected them. The purpose of this contextual research is to reconsider the status of 1950s comedy films placed in the blind spot by the precedent Korean film history studies. It tries to prove that 1950s comedy films are historical constructs that actively associated not only with the society and culture but also with the laughter modes beyond times.
Along with the melodrama, comedy was firstly formed as a single film genre and led "Korean Film Renaissance" as associating with other popular cultures and expanding the viewer market. Furthermore comedy films of those days played a key role to change the trend of the entertainment industry and popular cultures, and also captured 'mode of life' and 'structure of emotions' of the times.
1950s comedy films should be approached in terms of a popular culture history, not merely from a film historical point of view. It should also be discussed as one 'process' composed with various elements: development of show business, changes of systems, infrastructures, viewers, and socio-political environment. It is critical to find a proper methodology in order to approach the essential meaning of comedy genre.
In this light, this thesis focuses on two subjects. Firstly, it aims to shed light on the historicity of the genre formation of Korean comedy films by analyzing the social, intertextual, commercial context and systematic practices mediating communications with viewers. Secondly, it tries to prove that a close look at the comedy genre formation and its complicated social and cultural relations illuminates the 'untold part' of the popular culture history and film history of 1950s. Furthermore it would reveal the unconsciousness of the times and subconsciousness of the viewers those days.
To define the process of genre formation and historicity of comedy films, it focuses on the 'trend of show business' and the 'role of comedians.' Show business did not simply include film industry but also various popular cultures which had expanded its own field under the mutual influence with film industry. Here, show business concerns industrial, systematical, commercial conditions and infrastructures which triggered the popular culture cycle: rise, peak, and decline. Along with the advent of indoor theaters in the age of enlightenment, the formation of professional entertainers and introduction of Japanese entertainment refined comedies of the traditional performances into spectacular attractions and 'shows' of certain duration for certain audience. The comic performances of those days absorbed the contemporary modes of laughter through records of gramophone and radio, and also the cinematic modes of laughter acculturated into them for the popularity of foreign comedy films. Since mid-1930s, it was Ak-guk which had been the center of the show business for 20 years. Inserted into Ak-guk as an interlude, comic sequence, or short skit at first, comedy gradually developed to be a full-length play. The popularity of Ak-guk was continued despite the confusions of Liberation period and destructions of industrial infrastructures during the war. As Ak-guk gradually turned to be a variety entertainment, comedy became a major part of the stage. Beginning with the tax exemption policy on Korean films in 1954, money in show business flowed to film industry seeing the success of Chunhyangjeon(Lee Gyu-hwan, 1955). It resulted in the construction of infrastructure of Korean film industry. During those days, film industry could be relatively free from the censorship and absorbed comedy that was the center of the entertainment industry. It was also encouraged to produce comedy films as a well-received 'staple' not only in domestic market but also in overseas market.
Comedians were first to become entertainers as modern show business being formed in Korea. With the ability of mediating narrativity and popularity, these first comedians played a key role in the entertainment industry. They were flexible to adapt themselves to the transitional environment of performance and media at the times: from clowns of the palace to comic storytellers of the street, again to comic actors/actresses of the public troupe after the advent of modern 'theater', and later to comedians for television shows and films. They not only created new modes of comedies proper to each form of popular cultures but also played a unique role as a creative mediator between other popular cultures and comedy films. Most of all, comedians of 1950s were subjects who decided the forms and stories of film. They formed a single genre as themselves at the juncture when film industry somewhat settled and 'star system' established. Furthermore, they successfully played the middleman role to acculturate the modes of comedy of previous popular cultures into the cinema with their comic personae, performance style, and skills. They were also the multi-vocal text which embraced and expressed the heterogeneous demands of the viewers and times, at the same time mediates between the laughter modes and ideological environment. 1950s comedy films could be rising by virtue of these comedians.
Lastly, this thesis examines how 1950s comedy films reflected the times noticing the reality-relationality of comedy films. As widely accepted, comedy films are considered to reconfirm the traditional norms as reducing the differences by laughter. From the radical point of view, however, it is also considered to be a genre which hides the intention to subvert the established orders and deals with the ideological tensions and contradictions. 1950s comedy films are conformist by nature since they were the product of the era surrounded by the liberal democratic, anticommunist, and pro-American ideologies. However, it is also true that comedy films of those days were relatively free from the censorship than other genres. Therefore they enjoyed 'relative autonomy' which embraced more various voices compared to the rigidity of comedy films produced after 1960s. 1950s comedy films on the one hand suggested moral occult similar to the ethicality of melodrama presenting the success stories in finding love and job. On the other hand it captured the heterogeneous desires of audience of 'distinguished tastes' as describing the fluctuating characters between tradition and modern codes, and a certain moment when the 'energy' and vitality of people of sexual ambiguity meet with the era. That is, the vitality, multi-vocality, and heterogeneity of 1950s comedy films are the "closed openness" enjoyed by the "sub-culture" as an "acceptable deviation." These distractions of unintegrated energies, however, were refined and absorbed into the narrative under the Park Jung-hee regime when the 'father's law' started to wield the magnipotent power both socially and film historically. Therefore, the vitality of 1950s comedy films should be understood to be one way by which the public film communicates with the surrounding environment.
