Once in the past, everyone seemed to experience the problem and severity of school violence directly or indirectly.
This study was initiated with such a hypothesis that since the modality of school violence is different by student's ages, the method of prevention and countermeasure of it must be discriminately applied. In this vein, the purpose of this study was to examine the perceptual difference and current status of school violence with study subjects of middle and high school students and present the logical base for the method of preventing school violence in advance, preventing its reoccurrence, and effectively rooting out it.
For this, a questionnaire survey of 500 boy and girl students at 3 middle and high schools within the jurisdiction of G Education Office of and N Education Office, Seoul. Study subjects were sampled in consideration of school years.
Data were statistically computerized with the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. In order to examine demographic features, frequency analysis was carried out. And the current status of violence, namely doing harm and being damaged, was examined with crosstabulation-oriented x2 (chi-square).
Study findings are as follows:
As for the proportion of experiencing school violence, middle school boy students were highest. Boy students experienced school violence more than girl students did. Middle school students experienced more than high school students did. However, the extent of experience was not different by genders and schools. In other words, although there was difference in frequency, the difference was not significant.
First, the perceptual extent of severity of violence of school surroundings was not different by genders. In case of boy students, 'very severe' was less than 'not severe at all'. In case of girl students, 'very severe' was more than 'not severe at all'. This finding seems to somewhat reflect the fact that recently girl students' school violence has increased.
Second, there was difference in the perceptual severity of violence of school surroundings between students who had the experience of reporting it and who did not. Among students who had the experience of reporting it, the frequency of students who perceived the violence severely was more than that of students who perceived the violence ordinary. However, among students who had no experience of reporting it, students who perceived the violence ordinary were highest. And the frequency of students who did not perceive the violence severely was more than that of students who perceived the violence severely.
There was difference in the reason of not reporting school violence between middle school students and high school students. As for the reasons of 'afraid of retaliation' and 'do not know how to report', high school students were higher than middle school students.
Third, as for whether there was a violence circle or not, among 407 respondents (total 423, no response 16), only 119 (29.2%) students responded positively.
In this regard, it is necessary to punish school violence circles more severely. If there is no school violence circle, personal school violence or group ostracizing among students must be intensively handled.
Fourth, there was difference in the perceptual severity of violence of school surroundings by the existence of school violence circles or not. When there was a school violence circle, students perceived school violence more severely.
School violence is resulted in the composite function of students, families, schools and social factors and it is difficult to be settled down in a short time. However, if the government presents a definite direction of policy and a practical strategy of realizing the policy and carries out it consistently, people from all walks of life will have confidence and take part in the effort of settling down school violence.
