The purpose of this study is to find out the significance and meanings of the process of collaborative action research and to suggest the effective ways and process in running a science center. To accomplish these purposes, this study, based on collaborative action research for kindergarten science center activation, observed the changes of children, a teacher, and a researcher as well as the process of invigorating a science center in collaboration between a teacher and a researcher.
This researcher conducted action research for about five months, from March to July 2009, in cooperation with the teacher in charge of four-year-old children's class at a kindergarten. The problems and consequences of the observation and analysis are as follows:
First, how did collaborative action for kindergarten science center activation progress?
The researcher and the teacher cooperated with each other and diagnosed the problems of the current science center to promote the utilization of scientific inquiries and scientific process skill ability. In addition, the plans to revitalize the science center were devised by close analysis and discussion. The researcher and the teacher assigned the role of each by themselves, acquired communication skills, consulted with each other in an equal position, and harmoniously cooperated in order to improve the efficiency of the collaboration. Six measures to stimulate the science center were generated and executed in the process: improving the science center into one that includes many inquiry-oriented experiments, furnishing scientific instruments that motivate children, developing the science center into one that teaches to love and understand animals and plants, connecting the science center with daily lives, converting the science center into one for information use and indirect experience, and creating scientific and attractive circumstances.
Scientific curiosity and inquiry of children could be encouraged by "improving the science center into one that includes many inquiry-oriented experiments" when the teacher and the researcher provided the science center with various experiments and inquiry activities after they had newly understood and reinterpreted the experiments.
Children were given chances to easily learn scientific phenomena and principles by "furnishing scientific instruments that motivate children." The teacher personally searched for and introduced the instruments suitable for the development stages of children, and further, made the instruments considering children's interest and scientific principles.
Children could fully understand and constantly paid attention to animals and plants by "developing the science center into one that teaches to love and understand animals and plants." The teacher who had been afraid of animals opened her mind trying to raise animals and plants and suggested diverse inquiry activities that could practice scientific process skill ability.
The range of observation was extended by "connecting the science center with daily lives"; it enabled children to search for the objects for observation in their daily lives. Moreover, the interest for observation was enhanced by obtaining observation resources in connection with home, and observation ability in their daily lives was also improved.
Computers were introduced and the value and practical use of computer education were newly understood by "converting the science center into one for information use and indirect experience." Both children and the teacher could utilize computers as effective ways to obtain various information and indirect experience in the field of science.
Children began to think the science center attractive when "creating scientific and attractive circumstances" — adding aesthetic elements to the science center and displaying children's reporting materials.
Second, what is the significance of collaborative action research to invigorate the science center?
In terms of the teacher, she began to lead the activities and enjoy science conducting collaborative action research. The collaboration between the teacher and the researcher gave the teacher the chance to show her expertise and made her become independent. Besides, the teacher, practicing measures to stimulate the science center, acquired efficiency in teaching science and changed into scientific inquirer who connected science with everyday life.
In terms of the researcher, collaborative action helped her grow as the researcher and educator who understood children, teachers, and field. The researcher could treat equally and understand teachers through collaborative action, not leading the research or instructing the teacher. The researcher could also have vivid field experience teaching children in person at their level of understanding and could properly use the experience in science class.
For children, collaborative action research for science center activation helped them enjoy science as a playground and realize their scientific ability. Children began to have new understanding about science and to actively do research when the improved science center made them stay longer and visit more often. They learned science playing together, not playing alone, as the number of interesting activities increased at the science center.
In addition, children became diligent scientists and conducted various research using the science center as a base to apply science to daily life. They could build up their scientific ability by thinking ordinary things in scientific point of view.
In conclusion, collaborative action research for science center activation, like butterfly effect, expanded and transferred the activation of the science center to teachers, classes, and fields. Teachers could reflect their teaching and tried to improve it by organizing learning community on their own.
