ABSTRACT
The study aims to provide theoretical approach to the procedures of dance therapy that have existed so far and to find a solution for its popularization.
The history of dance therapy can be traced far back to the beginning of human history which we can see from shamanism, but modern understanding of it has been limited as most people understand it only as a type of psychotherapy. Contrary to this common misconception, it has been studied and practiced in physical training, psychopathology and other more practical fields. This was merely because it has never been established to be recognized as one thing.
Contemporary dance therapy has failed to integrate itself to pre-existing culture. Also its limited application should be extended beyond psychological and psychiatric area to put it to full use in this diverse society.
Our raising concerns about health and the potential adaptation of dance therapy makes it even more important to break through the cultural constraints. This study will develop theories about dance therapy and suggest solutions to popularization of dance therapy.
This study categorized the history of dance remedy as western and Korean to help understand those two comparatively. Especially for the western part, dances that were practiced in negative fashion are included to look into various forms of dance therapy.
After researching foreign cases of dance therapy, it is found that even in the United States, a leading country in dance therapy, shows its limitation and problems in pulling out the full potential of dance therapy. This study, therefore, propose there should be better understanding and broader application of dance therapy.
