As Korean society approaches the 21st century, it came to enter 'multi-cultural society' that is lived together by people who have diverse races and cultures, owing to the globalized open-door policy.
Especially, a rise in migrant women, who formed multi-cultural family by getting married to Korean men, has diverse problems that need to overcome cultural gap caused by mutually different cultural contact. This issue is becoming a reason for which migrant women from multi-cultural families are difficult to be adjusted to Korea.
The culture and arts education has characteristic of making it available for looking at with the perspective of diversity in mutually understanding and communicating difference in value system, custom, consciousness, and attitude of diverse races and nations.
As for migrant women from multi-cultural families with difficult communication, the participation in dance education is conducive to allowing relationship with other person to be easy with nonverbal persuasive power in social behavior, thereby likely becoming one means of stable cultural adjustment, and further being able to doubleness in self-efficacy through cultural adjustment. From this perspective, a research was progressed.
For this, it grasped the present status and the contents for participation in dance of migrant women from multi-cultural families nationwide, and then examined correlation between cultural adjustment and self-efficacy through participating in dance.
As a result, firstly, 7 centers in 6 regions were grasped to be carrying out dance lesson, in consequence of surveying 171 multi-cultural family support centers designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare nationwide, as the present status for participation in dance of migrant women from multi-cultural families. Korean dance was being mainly learnt. It was a participatory form in a program with unit from 3 months shortly to 1 year lengthily as the activity of centering on hobby.
Secondly, in the relationship with cultural adjustment through participating in dance program of migrant women from multi-cultural families, as a result of qualitative research, above all, the result was shown as saying of increasing cultural adjustment through participation in dance such as cultural understanding, national thought, understanding about a way of living, and understanding about cultural arts. As a result of quantitative research, the group with participation in dance was indicated to be less stressed by cultural adjustment than the group without participation in dance.
Thirdly, in the relationship with self-efficacy through participating in dance program of migrant women from multi-cultural families, the result was indicated that self-efficacy gets higher such as acquisition of self-expression, experience of achievement, enhancement in self-confidence, improvement in problem-solving ability, general self-efficacy such as satisfaction, positive support of the surrounding people, enhancement in interpersonal relations through smooth interaction, and social competence. As a result of quantitative research, the participation in dance was indicated to have positive effect on enhancing self-efficacy in migrant women.
Fourthly, in the relationship with cultural adjustment and self-efficacy among migrant women with participation in dance and migrant women without participation, the group with participation in dance was indicated to have the higher cultural adjustment level and self-efficacy figure than the group without participation in dance, in the cultural adjustment and self-efficacy as a result of questionnaire in 7 regions.
Fifthly, as for the program satisfaction in migrant women who participate in dance program, and for a desire for participation in dance of migrant women for the group without participation, most of dance participants were satisfied with the current program. This satisfactory figure is the result that there is positive effect on cultural adjustment and self-efficacy.
As for the contents of dance program, Korean creative dance and Fan Dance(Buchae Chum) were selected as the interesting dance. The dance, which is desired to be learnt, included the fan dance and the dance of using percussion instrument like a drum. The aim of desiring to learn dance was indicated to be in order of solution in stress, emotional stability, enhancement in interpersonal relations, and improvement in self-confidence.
Frequency of participation in dance program was desired much once a week. A factor of deciding on participation in dance program was the largest in the educational contents and program kinds. It was in order of extra time available for being educated, and the distance up to educational institution.
As for migrant women from multi-cultural families, the participation in dance will be a means of understanding a new way of living and culture in society that is different from a way of living and cultural environment that they have lived in the meantime. Cultural impact easing and psychological and emotional stability through participating in dance are changed gradually into a sense of achievement and satisfaction and self-efficacy in the process of cultural adjustment, thereby being able to help the more stable settlement life.
To increase efficiency of this participation in dance, a systematic and professional education program needs to be researched continuously in consideration of each region and subject, and environmental part. Even a supportive system, which is scattered by the government and by each local self-government, will need to be formed from the field-centered perspective.
The dance art education for the win-win multi-cultural era is a problem that cannot be solved with any one entity. When each of entities establishes big value system from the aspect called multi-cultural communication and harmony and when the systematic and efficient policy establishment and execution are connected with the substantial culture and arts education on the field, the biggest effect will be able to be achieved.
