The purpose of this study is to observe the present condition of individual parent counseling that is being conducted in the nursery school for the preparation of consequent improvements for a more efficient and successful parents of individual counseling.
For the purpose of this study, the appropriate research issues are: "What is the status of individual parent counseling in nursery school? What do nursery school teachers and parents know about individual parent counseling? What is the plan for the improvement of individual parent counseling in nursery school?" For research purposes, recorded studies and previous research literature inside and outside of the country were used as basic research tools and the Teachers' and Parents' Questionnaires by Hwang Hyeonju (2003) and Kang Seonhwa (2007) were used.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows.
First, it is evident that there is a high participation rate for individual parent counseling in nursery school but because of lack of time, some parents do not have the opportunity to avail of the counseling.
It is not that teachers are excluding parents from these individual counseling but to increase the involvement of parents and conduct effective counseling, there is a need to consider the flexibility of the counseling time and day of the parents who inevitably have difficulty in participating and prepare a variety of individual counseling methods like telephone counseling and counseling in cyberspace possibly through e-mail.
Second, teachers should endeavor to improve their professional skills in individual counseling. In order for a teacher to have professional expertise and qualification in individual counseling, the teacher should have knowledge of child development, basic counseling theories, teaching methods for children, and learn effective communication methods and develop it. In addition, learning a variety of methods for parent counseling helps improve the teachers' professional skills so scholarship or training opportunities at the nursery school should be encouraged.
Third, an adequate support system is insufficient for individual counseling preparation with related increase in workload. At the beginning of the semester, it is necessary for teachers to prepare in advance the counseling plan and prepare the counseling materials gradually. At the nursery school, the counseling teacher should actively cooperate, and for the teacher and parents to be able to support, a variety of plans should be prepared.
Fourth, in my experience, teachers who are team teaching children have to share all the information necessary and participate in the counseling together. However, there can be different values and opinions about teaching children
and the long counseling time can be a burden. That is the reason why separate counseling happens and there was a higher response. For team teaching teachers to participate in the counseling, it is necessary for both teachers and parents to highly understand the need since team teaching teachers participating in the counseling can be viewed as desirable. To do so, both teachers should strive to give their opinions before participating in the counseling and after the counseling, both act as mentors for a more efficient and successful counseling.
Fifth, in the university curriculum, parents and family counseling related subjects is required to open communication skills and foster strategies in parent management skills. For communicating with parents, counseling skills must be acquired through case studies of practical information and once the actual content of the education is established, the difficulty and the pressure in individual counseling for parents will be reduced and it will help a lot in the increase of effective communication skills.
