Dance represents the culture and sentiment of the country by the art for physical movements of the human being. 'Salpuri dance', the Traditional Korean dance, contains the world of deep resentment in its dance motion, and its magnificence and beauty can be said to be fantastic. In addition, it has been recognized, preserved, handed down and developed while containing our proper culture containing the artistic characteristic with a long history. But the dance motion has differed according to its dancer and the times, and the characteristics and internal and external meaning of the dance motion have not been handed down to the next generation. Additionally, this study was conducted because the study on traditional Korean dance applying Laban's analysis of movement is at a stage of infancy, Therefore, it attempted to elicit the movement characteristics of 'Salpuri dance' of Lee Bang-mae, important intangible cultural property No. 97 on the basis of body, effort, space, shape of Laban's theory of movement and clarify the principle and internal meaning of movement. As a result, it drew the following conclusion on this basis.
First, the dance motion remarkably found in physical terms was found to include pyongsaui, yanguseon, oesaui, Oggaegeolchigi saui, yeomeochigi, didim, bididim and the like. Every movement began from the center(danjeon) of the trunk, where the change of movements such as stoppage of breath, the length of breath and the like, namely the inner stream the movement of free arms and legs, and breath, are expressed as motions.
Second, the dance motion remarkably found in terms of effort was found to include the dance motions of wrapping the towel around the head, of jerking the towel, of humoring, tiptoeing and the like. The effort of restrained stream was strongly represented through the effort and breath of free stream of movement of the upper body, and the change of this effort switched from the stable state to the rhythmical state and exposing deep resentment by lifting the inner emotion up slowly.
Third, the dance motions remarkably in terms of space were found to pyongsaui, dance motion of lifting the towel up, the dance motion of sitting down, walking zigzag, walking with rapid steps and the like. The 'Salpuri dance' was principally conducted in the individual space, and it was found that the traverse path was used in the movement of both arms and legs. And the dance motion was presented in diverse space, the 1-, 2- and 3-dimension space with the use of space due to the motion of taking a step.
Fourth, the dance motions remarkably found in terms of shape were found to include those of stripping off, wearing, turning upward and jerking the towel and of jerking the skirt off and the like. These dance motions principally took a curved form and represented the feminine and soft image and were presented as dynamics, takeoff, joy and vibrancy. This was found to express inner attitudes such as emotions and feelings and the like rather than emphasize a special form of movement.
And 'Salpuri dance' makes a good expression of the principles of movement in stillness, and the bending and extension of dance motions and tying and untying, straddling both legs, and Dae Sam So Sam(strong motion & weak motion or big movement & small movement). It can be said to have the value as traditional Korean dance by making a good representation of inner emotions such as sorrow and resentment through the natural stream of dance rather than a special form of movement.
Accordingly, it is necessary to continue to theorize and systematize 'Salpuri dance', the traditional Korean dance, to succeed to and preserve it in the future. For this purpose, it is necessary to consider the objective and empirical approach to traditional Korean dance from diverse angles and attempt to analyze the movements found in traditional Korean dance. This can make traditional Korean dance more intelligible and accessible to the public at large as well as professional dancers, and lay the foundation for publicizing and distributing traditional Korean dance widely to the world.
