(Abstract)
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the Transactional Analysis for Teens Program(TAT) to family communication and adjustment of youth. The participants were fifty two students from two middle schools located in Daegu and Pohang. Half of them were assigned to the experimental group, and the other half were assigned to the control group.
The instrument used for this study were Family Problem Solving Communication by McCubbin, McCubbin, and Thompson(1996), Adolescent Concerns Evaluation by Springer(1998). The program was practiced twice a week and each session lasted for eighty minutes, totally eight sessions. The scores of the two groups at the point of pre-test, post-test were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 using descriptive statistics analysis, -test, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, repeated measures ANOVA, and correlation analysis.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows.
The pre-test scores and sociodemographic factors of both groups indicated that they were homogeneous. However, as for the post-test, the family communication scores of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group(p<.001). The TAT program was effective for reducing adjustment scores of the experimental group(p<.001).
In conclusion, the results of this study showed that the TAT program has a significant, positive effect to family communication and adjustment of youth. For the prevention of problem behaviors and the welfare of youth, instructions and the program to help them improve their family communication and adjustment should be done for them at school, community and home.
