(Abstract)
The current study aims to examine how subcategories of empowerment affect life satisfaction of persons with mental disorders. For this, we investigated the current levels and life satisfaction of the mental disorder persons, and in order to enhance their life satisfaction, we sought for the direction in what areas of the mentally disabled empowerment should be strengthened.
For this research, we conducted a survey with the 251 mentally disabled using the mental health institution of the community in Gyeonggi-do, and the data was analyzed with SPSS WIN 12.0. The main findings of the survey are as follows:
Firstly, the level of the overall empowerment of the mentally disabled was a little higher that the medium level of the scale, and by subcategories, personal empowerment was recognized in the highest way and the next was interpersonal empowerment, and socio-political empowerment was recognized in the lowest way. The overall level of their life satisfaction appeared a little higher than the medium level of the scale, and for the subcategories, satisfaction with the residential environment was highest, and satisfaction with mental health was lowest.
Second, it was found that control variables of affecting life satisfaction of the mentally disabled are religion and types of taking medicine. The life satisfaction of the group who had religions was higher than that of the group who answered they had no religion, and the group who took medicine for themselves showed higher life satisfaction than the group who took it irregularly.
Third, as a result of investigating into the effect of empowerment of the mentally disabled on their life satisfaction, which is the main purpose of the current study, it was found that empowerment has a great effect on the overall life satisfaction and the survey indicates that personal empowerment out of subcategories of empowerment has a significant effect on the overall life satisfaction. Especially, it found that the influence of the entire empowerment is greater than the subcategories of empowerment from the perspective of the effect on life satisfaction of the mentally disabled. If we examine empowerment and life satisfaction by subcategory first, the survey found that personal empowerment has a significant effect on life satisfaction in all the subcategories and interpersonal empowerment has a significant effect on relation satisfaction with family and relatives and interpersonal satisfaction. Socio-political empowerment did not affect the subcategories of life satisfaction to a certain degree.
Finally, as a result of examining which factor has more effect on life of the mentally disabled out of demographic characteristics and empowerment, it was found that empowerment has more effect on life satisfaction than demographic characteristics.
The present study has significations in that it is research to survey the effect of empowerment of the mentally disabled on their life satisfaction investigating into comprehensive empowerment including interpersonal empowerment and socio-political empowerment without limiting to personal empowerment, but it has limits to generalize findings of the survey being limited to a region and an target organization. The follow-up studies should include subjects who are hospitalized in a variety of regions and psychiatric hospitals, subjects who are care units and outpatients having their residence in the local community. In addition, although mental health institutions are organizations to enhance mental health of the mentally disabled, physical and mental health satisfaction recognized by the mentally disabled was the lowest level and the follow-up studies are required in order to understand the reasons of the still lower results than before.
