(Abstract)
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether children`s ego-resilience could buffer negative effects of daily stress on their school adjustment.
The research target was 465 students from 3 elementary schools in Gyeongsangbuk-do. They were 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. The Daily Stress Scale for Children(Han and yu, 1995) was used to measure children`s daily stress. Children`s school adjustment was assessed using a revised version of the Children`s School Adjustment(Lim, 1993). Children`s Ego-Resilience Scale was assessed using a revised version of the Children`s Ego-Resilience Scale for Children(Bak, 1997). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis, independent t-test, ANOVA, and moderated regression analysis through the SPSS 17.0 statistic program.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, the average of percept daily stress was lower than the middle score. The average of school adjustment and ego-resilience were high grade.
Second, by analyzing school adjustment of children from sociodemographic factors, there is a significant statistical difference on their gender, grade, school record, economy standard, mother's job,
Third, There was a significantly negative relationship between children`s daily stress and their school adjustment. That is, children who experienced more daily stress had more difficulty in adjusting to their school life.
Fourth, Children`s ego-resilience had significantly positive relationships with their school adjustment. That is, children who had higher ego-resilience was well-adjusted to their school life.
Fifth, Children`s ego-resilience moderated negative effect of the daily stress on school adjustment, although the moderate effect was weak.
In conclusion, children`s daily stress and ego-resilience have an effect on school adjustment. Moreover, ego-resilience could moderate the effect of the daily stress on school adjustment. Instructions and the program at school and home to help them improve their ego-resilience will have a enormous positive impact on their school adjustment.
