This study examined the social capital and quality of life of Asian marriage migrant women in Korea. The reason for this study to be concerned about women is because they are a new civil force that challenges the notion of Korean society and governing system identifying the single race with the nation as well as engaged in family, work and local community while playing the roles of mother, worker and citizen. In this thesis, the understanding of social capital of women is useful not only in understanding women but also in identifying the relationship with the indigenous people. And it is allowed to analyze women's relationship on the base of inequality in social capital. Thus, this study was aimed to empirically investigate the basis to seek the specific measures for action as a multi-racial and multi-cultural society by examining the impact of social capital on the quality of life.
Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the social capital within the family, work and society of the Asian married female migrants and to analyze the impact of social capital on the quality of life. For this purpose, this study directly surveyed the married female migrants living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do areas through the organizations for migrant workers, feminist organization, female migrant self-organization, local community social welfare organization and multicultural family support center or conducted the mailed questionnaire survey. And some migrant female surveyors introduced by the organizations supported the research. The final sample size was 156 females.
The results were as follows:
First, the social capital within the women's family(3.65) was higher that those within work(3.18) and the society(2.49). In addition, as was higher their children's education level which is the sub-factor of the social capital within the family, the life satisfaction of the women was higher. It is inevitable for the marriage migrant women who settle down in a strange society to accumulate the social capital with strong tie around family and close relatives. The education level of the children functions as the social relationships in which the connection networks inside and outside the family. In other words, as the women as a mother intervene more in their children's education, they can acquire the public/private acknowledgement and be empowered, which in turn increase the quality of their lives.
Second, the number of children is a contradictory factor that not only increases the level of social capital within the society but also negatively affects the quality of life. In addition, with respect to the relationships with the indigenous people in relation to children, this study found that the children's teacher was the most important social capital next to the Korean family members. As the number of children with Korean nationality increases, the marriage migrant women reveals the desire to expand their roles as a 'mother' to a 'worker' and a 'citizen'. This was confirmed by the findings in this study that the social capital within the society was higher and statistically significant as the number of children increases. On the contrary, as the women had more children, their life satisfaction was lower due to the increased caring labor, load on family economy and conflicts from patriarchal family culture.
Third, the relationships with the supervisors with the marriage migrant women had a positive impact on the quality of their lives. For women, work functions not only as the basis to build relational ties with other people than family members but also as the social basis where they can acquire economic power, rearrange the familial power and participate in society as a worker. The social capital within work is closely associated with the instrumental consequences such as promotion and income. In particular, the hierarchical relationship is related to the acquisition of socio-economic status of the women. Therefore, the relationship with their supervisors are important in this study, and the result showed that it had a positive impact on their life satisfaction.
Fourth, the social capital of the marriage migrant women built in Korea included the inequality mingled with the gender, race and class discriminations. According to the findings of this study, the inequality of social capital can be inferred from the level and range of the social capital of the migrant women, the social/structural discrimination across different home countries and lack of cross-national transferability of their educational experiences. Since they migrated to Korean society for their marriage, it should be the first time for them to build the homogeneous cohesive relationship around family and close relatives. On the contrary, the social capital of the female migrants within the family is lower than those within work and society, which reflects the reality in which they do not build various social relationships with the indigenous people and are excluded in a discriminated way.
In addition, this study found that the South-East Asian women build lower level of social capital than those from other Asian regions. The South-East Asian women are recognized and alienated as 'foreign bride with dark skin who came from poor Asian countries for marriage'. It means that they build narrow and low social networks for the discriminating views and prejudice against them in Korean society. In the similar context, the study results showed that their educational level was not significant in building social capital. Their educational capital are not linked to employment since Korea lacks in standardized acknowledgement system for the education level in other countries. In other words, this study found that although the female migrants have high level of education, they are downgraded into the lower social class in Korea, subordinate to their husband's socioeconomic status and placed in a discriminatin
