This research aims at examining whether a group art therapy program is effective to enhance high school students’ sense of identity and self-esteem, helping them develop more sound and positive sense of identity and self-esteem. It also investigates the possibility to make constant use of a group art therapy program in general high schools. As for the subjects of this research, the applicants interested in a group art therapy program were selected among the second graders majoring in designing at a vocational high school located in Y city, Gyeonggi-do, which were 36 in total including 18 in an experiment group (2 males and 16 females) and other 18 subjects in a control group (2 males and 16 females). One session for the activity lasted for 50 minutes, and 16 sessions were conducted in total - two or three times a week - on the experiment group, and no experimental treatment or intervention was taken on the control group. The tests on one’s sense of identity and self-esteem were conducted before and after the experiment to analyze the differences between the experiment group and the control group. In addition, data were collected through a preliminary and a post K-H-T-P, the writings about impression and observation records at each session of the program, investigation into the satisfaction level with the program, interviews, and etc., and the specific changes in the subjects’ reaction and acts before and after the program were analyzed.
The result of this research is as follows.
While the group art therapy program didn’t make a statistically meaningful contribution to the enhancement of self-esteem, a statistically meaningful influence was proved with the factor of ‘self-assertiveness’ among the seven subordinate elements of the sense of identity. Moreover, the analysis into the changes in K-H-T-P, the result of case study, the reaction of the experiment group during the group art therapy program at each section and the survey results afterwards showed that after the program, the group art therapy program helped most participants change themselves. When it comes to the detailed changes, mainly their relationship with their parents or siblings had been improved so that they came to have more conversation and better understanding of one another, became less awkward, had less frequent conflicts, and so on, which was the biggest difference from the previous relationship with their family members. Furthermore, the participants reported that their feelings of depression, irritation and distraction had decreased, they became able to express their feelings, received help have their own dreams, and came to feel comfortable, which proves that the group art therapy program had a positive influence on the participants’ emotions.
