The purpose of this research is to examine what relationship parents' attachment, aggressiveness and social support have with primary school children's adaptation to school life and to determine whether or not parents' attachment and adaptation to school life are mediated by aggressiveness and social support.
Polled for this research were 426 boys and girls in the sixth grade from three primary schools in Incheon Broad City. Data were collected through questionnaires prepared using tools of scales, namely parents'attachment scale, aggressiveness scale, social support scale and adaptation to school life scale. Collected data were processed by SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 5.0. In order to find any difference between boys and girls in terms of attachment, aggressiveness, and social support, t-verification was conducted. Moreover, to identify how parents' attachment, aggressiveness and social support of primary school children were related with their adaptation to school life, Pearson correlation coefficients were used in the computation. To examine the effects of fatherly attachment, motherly attachment, aggressiveness and social support on adaptation to school life, multiple regression analyses were conducted. To examine whether aggressiveness and social support acts as a mediating variable in the process that parents' attachment is influencing children's adaptation to school life, hierarchical regression analyses were performed. To verify the mediating effects of aggressiveness and social support in the process of the level of parents' attachment influencing children's adaptation to school life, path analysis was performed.
The result of this research is as follows.
First, regarding the difference between boys and girls in terms of parents' attachment, aggressiveness and social support, it was found that the attachment level of boys was higher than that of girls, and in terms of aggressiveness boys were also higher than the girls. However, there was no significant difference between boys and girls in terms of social support.
Second, the analysis of the relationship of parents'attachment, aggressiveness and social support with adaptation to school life shows that there is a significant positive correlation between parents'attachment and social support and adaptation to school life, whereas there is a negative correlation between parents' attachment and aggressiveness, and between aggressiveness and adaptation to school life.
Third, as for the effects of fatherly attachment, motherly attachment, aggressiveness and social support on adaptation to school life, it has been shown that social support and aggressiveness, in descending order, have a significant effect on adaptation to school life, and the higher the social support is and the lower the aggressiveness is, the better can children adapt themselves to school life.
Fourth, the analysis on the mediating effects of aggressiveness and social support in the relationship of parents'attachment and adaptation showed that aggressiveness partially mediates the relationship of attachment with adaptation to school life, whereas social support completely mediates the relationship of parents' attachment and adaptation to school life.
However, in order to verify the mediating effects of aggressiveness and social support when the level of parents' attachment influences children's adaptation to school life, path analysis was conducted. The result of the path analysis showed that both the model setting the partial mediating effects of aggressiveness and social support and the model setting the complete mediating effects of aggressiveness and social support show a favorable level. However, pursuant to the principle of brevity, it has been judged that it is desirable to choose the complete mediating effects. Accordingly, it can be seen that parents'attachment is completely mediated by aggressiveness and social support, rather than directly influencing the adaptation. Therefore, it has been found that, although parents' attachment important, counseling intervention of heightening social support and lowering aggressiveness is needed to enhance the level of adaptation to school life. Next, parametric estimated value of the model shows that fatherly attachment and motherly attachment have a negatively significant effect on aggressiveness, and fatherly attachment and motherly attachment have a positively significant effect on social support. Particularly, it has been shown that motherly attachment has a stronger effect on social support than fatherly attachment. It has been shown that aggressiveness has a negatively significant effect on adaptation to school life, and social support has a positively significant effect on adaptation to school life. The variables that have great total effects on children's adaptation to school life are social support, motherly attachment, aggressiveness and fatherly attachment, in the order of their magnitude.
Based on the above results, it can be predicted that children who have high fatherly attachment and motherly attachment are low in aggressiveness and are more likely to receive social support, whereas children with a high level of aggressiveness find it difficult to adapt themselves to school life. Moreover, the greater social support children receive, the better they can adapt themselves to school life. The factor that has the greatest effect on children's adaptation to school life is social support. So, it is considered important to develop and apply programs that can enhance children's relationship with their parents, teachers and friends. It has been suggested that teachers' action and interest in enhancing desirable education of parents and the level of children's adaptation to school life can help children grow and develop into a healthy, well-balanced member of society.
