This study was aimed to research the difference in metacognition and scientific problem finding, correlation between scientific problem finding and metacognition, and finding the metacognition factor that affects in finding scientific problems between scientific problem finding and metacognition and the difference between scientifically gifted and the average students.
Through those procedures, the following results were obtained:
First, scientifically gifted students have higher degree of metacognition in the whole factor of metacognition than average students do.
Second, scientifically gifted students have higher degree in the sub-factors of problem findings such as precision, research motivation, and creativity than average students. However, average students are higher than scientifically gifted students in the degree of inquiry.
Third, the result of correlation between the factors of scientific problem finding and metacognition showed that problem findings and metacognition were correlated in both groups of scientifically gifted students and average students. Precision was correlated with self-control of metacognition in both groups of scientifically gifted students and average students. Research motivation was correlated with the experience of metacognition, and the degree of inquiry was highly correlated with the metacognition knowledge.
Fourth, the factors of metacognition that affect the scientific problem findings are precision, research motivation, and the degree of inquiry. Each factor had different results like the followings. For scientifically gifted students, monitoring, which is one of sub-factors of self-control of metacognition, had the most effect on precision. For average students, however, strategy, which is one of sub-factors of metacognition knowledge affected most. In case of research motivation, the experience of metacognition affected most for scientifically gifted students. For average students, knowledge about people, which is one of sub-factors of metacognition knowledge, affected most. In addition, the sub-factors of metacognition, which affect the degree of inquiry, were knowledge about people which is a sub-factor of metacognition knowledge. For average students, knowledge about people which is one of the sub-factors of metacognition knowledge affected most. In the field of creativity, the experience of metacognition affected most for scientifically gifted students, and knoweldge about the assignment, which is one of the sub-factors of metacognition knowledge affected most for average students.
The followings are the suggestions though this study:
First, scientific problem finding and metacognition can be a distinctive feature of scientifically gifted children.
Second, scientific problem finding is strongly correlated to metacognition. This result shows that it is necessary to improve in the field of metacognition including the improvement of scientific knowledge to expect outstanding scientific output because not only scientific knowledge but also various factors of metacognition have mixedly effect on finding scientific problems
Third, the correlationship of scientific problem finding and metacognition applies to average students as well as scientifically gifted students. This result is very suggestive in metacognition which is necessary to improve problem findings
Fourth, it is necessary to notice the difference in the sub-factors of metacognition, which affects scientific problem findings, between scientifically gifted students and average students. Through further research about the reason why there is difference in the degree which affects sub-factors even though the factors of metacognition that affects scientific problem findings are almost same, more researches are necessary to decide whether the difference in sub-factors can be a distinctive feature of scientifically gifted children requires more researches.
