Although today's society accomplished the improvement of quality of life along with technological development, at the back of this positive aspect, mutual conflicts, confrontations, and distrust exist. As the negative aspects of society become conspicuous, many people began to pay attention to social capital as the solution to those negative aspects.
Previous research has provided with various discussions on the reasons for the decrease and possible ways to avert the situation. Recently, the decrease in social capital was suggested to be the reason for such increase of mass media use in entertainment program.
Previous research, however, has the limitation that the research model has been based solely on the relation of mass media and social capital. Individuals' interpersonal communication channel can be seen as the output of social capital. Hence, it can be argued that other variables such interpersonal communication channel should be incorporated into the research model.
The purpose of this study is to carry out an empirical study on the impacts of interpersonal communication channel use upon two such types of social capital as social network, personal trust. this study targeted a group of university student in Pusan.
This study examined the impacts of wire telephone, cellular phone, e-mail, instant messenger, blog and mini hompy' using hours, and those using patterns, which are the independent variables, upon personal trust, social network, which are the dependent variables.
The results are as follows: First, a mount of cellular phone, e-mail, instant messenger, and blog using had positive influences on social network. Second, heavy cellular phone and blog user had negative influences on personal trust. Taken together, it was found that the amount of off-line network had positive influence on the personal trust but that of on-line network had negative impacts.
This study investigated the impact of the university students' interpersonal communication channel use upon the formation of social capital. As a result, this study found out that a preferential communication channel use had impacts upon tow types of social capital - social network, personal trust.
