The purpose of this research is the study about how the play therapy by a visiting therapist of elementary school is effective to improve the self-control ability, the improvement of school adaptation and the play behavior of children with ADHD.
For this research purpose, the following items have been selected by the studying program.
First item is how the play therapy by a visit of elementary school can improve the self-control of the children with ADHD.
Second item is how the play therapy by a visit of elementary school can help the school adjustability of the children with ADHD.
Third item is how the play therapy by a visit of elementary school ADHD can change the play behavior the children with ADHD.
The research target was recommended the 25 children to show distracted behavior from a class teacher in the three elementary school, located in chonan, chungcheongnam-do. These children have carried out ADHD Diagnostic System(ADS) tests that distinguish ADHD children, from October 6 in 2009 to October 16 in 2009. Among those, not ADHD children excepted in objects of study. After selecting ADHD children, and get agreement of school parents and no children of taking drug and treatment, and so select eight children in a testing group and a control group among them. Then there are carry out the play therapy by a visit of school for each 45 minute at once-a-week from November in 2009 to February in 2010. All playing session are recorded by VTR(video tape recorder).
‘Self-Control Scale for School-Aged Children’ by Kyeong-nim Lee (2000) ‘Inspection of Children's Adaptability to School environment’ by Yoon-hee Yoo (1994) were used to verify the effect of a study before/after the program implement. Wilcoxon's Rank Sum-test on SPSS/Window 12.0 was used for data management purposes and to analyze the data statistically.
The following results were obtained through this research.
First, the play therapy by a visit of elementary school has positive effects to improve the self-control ability of ADHD children. In comparison with before/after the grade of the testing group, a preliminary inspection grade obtained less than a post-inspection. On the other hand, the self-control ability grade of the control group decreased less the post-inspection grade than the preliminary inspection grade. As for this result, the play therapy by a visit of elementary school prove to effect the self-control improvement of ADHD children.
Second, the play therapy by a visit of elementary school has effects to improve the adaptation to school environment of ADHD children. While the adaptation grade to school environment of the testing group have statistically a meaningful
distinction after the play therapy, the another group have not. Judging from this, the play therapy by a visit of elementary school know to effect the adaptation to school environment of ADHD children.
Third, the play therapy by a visit of elementary school has positive changes to improve the play action of ADHD children. The Observational Instrument score by the play therapy of the test group find significant differences after carrying out the play therapy. So, when compare the preliminary inspection and the post-inspection of the Observational Instrument, the post-inspection score is less than the preliminary inspection, there are statistically distinct differences between the two. Also, looking at the average changing of the play therapy session, the average score fluctuate each the session, but the average score is mostly down. Therefore, after the play therapy by a visit of school, a play action of the children have positive changing.
Through the research results, the play therapy by a visit of elementary school establish the effect to improve the self-control ability and the adaptation to school environment, the play action of ADHD children.
