본 연구는 기술혁신 역량을 강화하기 위한 중요한 프레임워크로 논의되고 있는 개방형 혁신에 초점을 맞춰 개방형 혁신활동의 영향요인을 찾아내고, 개방형 혁신활동이 혁신성과에 긍정적인 영향을 주는지, 나아가 다수의 개방형 혁신사례에서 제시된 것처럼 개방형 혁신성과가 궁극적으로 기업의 상업적(경제적) 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 지를 검증하는데 논점을 두고, 기술혁신활동을 수행하고 있는 우리나라의 제조기업을 대상으로 실증분석을 통하여 알아보았다.
구체적으로 개방형 혁신활동의 영향요인 및 성과를 분석하기 위하여 우선적으로 기존의 이론 및 선행연구를 고찰하였으며, 특히, 개방형 혁신활동에 영향을 주는 요인을 분류하기 위해 개방형 혁신활동 내용에 대한 각각의 부문별 단편적인 선행연구는 존재하지만 종합적인 차원에서의 영향요인에 대한 선행연구는 존재하지 않는 측면을 고려하여 개방형 혁신활동에 포함되는 세부연구주제별 영향요인을 광범위하게 정리하여 분석하였다. 이러한 선행연구결과에 대한 분석을 통하여 개방형 혁신활동의 영향요인, 개방형 혁신활동, 개방형 혁신성과, 기업성과의 관계에 대한 종합적인 연구모형을 제시하였고 국내 149개 제조기업의 설문응답내용을 토대로 실증분석을 실시하였다. 이에 따른 세부연구주제별 주요 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 개방형 혁신활동에 영향을 미치는 요인을 환경특성, 기업특성, 제도특성으로 분류하여 살펴보았는데, 환경특성 요인의 경우 시장경쟁정도와 기술변화정도가 내향형 혁신활동에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다, 이는 기업들이 시장경쟁정도가 심해지거나 기술변화정도가 높아질 경우, 자사의 기술개발 촉진 및 시장에서의 우위를 유지하거나 선점하기 위하여 공동연구, 사용자 혁신 등 외부로부터의 기술도입 및 외부의 정보활용에 노력을 기울인다는 의미로 해석될 수 있다. 기업특성 요인의 경우, 내향형 혁신활동은 연구개발인력, 연구개발투자, 국제화사업건수, 해외수출, 조직문화 개방성에 의해 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났으며, 외향형 혁신활동은 국제화조직특성, 기업가정신(역량특성)에 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 기업들이 내향형 혁신활동을 강화하기 위해서는 우선적으로 연구인력, 연구비 등의 R&D 투입요소의 증대에 관심을 갖어야 됨을 의미하며, 반면 외향형 혁신활동을 높이기 위해서는 국제화 전담조직을 육성하며, CEO도 독자적인 내부 기술혁신활동에 기업가정신을 발휘하기 보다는 개방적이고 협력적인 기술혁신활동에 기업가정신을 집중해야 됨을 의미한다. 제도특성 요인의 경우 내향형 혁신활동에서는 기술네트워킹에 의해, 외향형 혁신활동의 경우 산업클러스터 입주여부 및 기술네트워킹에 의해 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 정부에서 제도적으로 개방형 혁신활동을 촉진시키기 위해서는 산업클러스터 조성과 기업들의 기술네트워킹 확대에 노력을 기울여야 함을 의미한다.
둘째, 개방형 혁신활동이 혁신성과에 미치는 영향을 검증하기 위하여 혁신성과를 제품혁신성과, 공정혁신성과, 기술학습성과로 분류하여 살펴보았는데, 제품혁신성과는 내향형 및 외향형 혁신활동이, 공정혁신성과는 내향형 혁신활동만이, 기술학습성과는 내향형 및 외향형 혁신활동 모두에서 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 정도의 차이는 있을 수 있지만, 내향형 혁신활동 및 외향형 혁신활동의 개방형 혁신활동이 기업의 혁신성과 창출에 긍정적인 기여를 하고 있는 것이며, 기업들이 혁신성과를 높이기 위해서는 개방형 혁신활동에 더욱 관심을 갖을 필요가 있음을 시사하며, 특히, 내향형 혁신활동의 증대에 보다 관심을 갖고 접근할 필요가 있음을 보여준다.
셋째, 개방형 혁신성과가 기업의 상업적 성과에 영향을 미치는 지를 검증하였는데, 기업의 상업적 성과는 개방형 제품혁신성과와 개방형 기술학습성과에 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 개방형 혁신활동을 통한 혁신성과가 기업의 매출액 증대에 긍정적인 영향을 보여줌으로써 기업의 성장과 발전에 기여하고 있음을 보여주는 결과라 할 수 있다.
종합적으로 개방형 혁신활동은 기업을 둘러싸고 있는 환경특성, 기업의 인적, 물적 역량이라 할 수 있는 기업특성, 그리고 정부의 제도적 특성에 의해 영향을 받으며, 개방형 혁신활동이 기업의 혁신성과 창출에 도움을 주고 나아가 기업의 성장지표라 할 수 있는 상업적 성과에도 긍정적인 효과를 보여주고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

Focusing on open innovation which is regarded as an important framework for strengthening technological innovation capabilities, in this study empirical analysis is conducted on Korean manufacturing companies that carry out innovation activities in order to identify influence factors for open innovation activities, determine whether open innovation activities have a positive effect on innovation performance, and verify whether open innovation performances have positive effect on economic performance of companies as presented in various case studies on open innovation.
In order to analyze the effects and results of open innovation, study on precedent related-theories and studies was first conducted, and in particular to identify the influence factors of open innovation activities, influence factors of each specific research category which are part of open innovation activities were analyzed extensively taking into consideration that there are fragmentary preceding research on each sector of open innovation activities but no comprehensive precedent research on the influence factors. Based on the analysis of precedent research influence factors, comprehensive research model is suggested on the relationship between open innovation, open innovation activities, open innovation performance, and company performance and empirical analysis is conducted based on the survey results of 149 domestic manufacturing companies. Major results of specific research category are as follows:
Firstly, analysis on the influence factors of open innovation activities categorized into characteristics of environment, firm-specific characteristics, and characteristics of institutions revealed that characteristics of environment in terms of the degree of market competition and technological changes influence outside-in open innovation activities. Such results suggest that companies respond to increased market competition or technological changes by promoting research and development (R&D) and maintaining or acquiring market competitiveness through introduction of external technology and utilization of external information by means of research collaboration, user innovation, and so on. In terms of firm-specific characteristics, outside-in open innovation activities are influence by R&D personnel, R&D investment, number of international business, export, and openness of corporate culture while inside-out open innovation activities are influenced by characteristics of international organization and CEO's capabilities. In order for companies to strengthen outside-in open innovation activities emphasis on research personnel, R&D input factors such as research funds are necessary whereas to increase inside-out open innovation activities organization solely responsible for international affairs should be established while the CEO needs to focus on open and cooperative entrepreneurship rather than internal technological innovation activities. In terms of characteristics of institutions, outside-in innovation activities are influenced by technological networking whereas inside-out innovation activities are influenced by networking for development of technology and the presence in industrial cluster. This means that the government needs to establish industrial clusters and try to expand technological networking to facilitate open innovation activities.
Secondly, analysis of innovation performance categorized by product innovation performance, process innovation performance, and technology learning performance to verify the effects of open innovation activities on innovative performance showed that product innovation performance and technology learning performance are influenced by both inside-out and outside-in innovation activities while process innovation performance is influence only by inside-out innovation activities. Although the degree of influence can vary, inside-out and out-side in innovation activities of open innovation activities have positive effects on innovation performance of companies and suggest that companies needs to concentrate more on open innovation activities to increase innovative performance, particularly on inside-out innovation activities.
Thirdly, analysis of open innovation performance on commercial performance of companies revealed that commercial performance are influenced by products innovation performance and technology learning performance. Such results show that innovation performance attained through open innovation activities have positive effects on the gross sales of companies thereby contributing to their growth and development.
To sum up, open innovation activities are influenced by environmental characteristics, firm specific characteristics which can be identified by personnel and physical characteristics, and systematic characteristics the government, and open innovation activities help create innovative performance and further positively influence commercial performance which can be seen as the growth indicator of companies.
