The purpose of this research is to examine what relationship parents' attachment, emotional regulation and children's peer competence have with primary school children's adaptation to school life and to determine whether or not parents' attachment and adaptation to school life are mediated by emotional regulation and children's peer competence
Polled for this research were 300 boys and girls in the sixth grade from three primary schools in Incheon Broad City. Data were collected through questionnaires prepared using tools of scales, namely parents' attachment scale, emotional regulation scale, social emotional regulation and adaptation to school life scale. Collected data were processed by SPSS WIN 15.0. In order to find to identify how parents' attachment, emotional regulation and children's peer competence of primary school children were related with their adaptation to school life, Pearson correlation coefficients were used in the computation. To examine the effects of fatherly attachment, motherly attachment, emotional regulation and children's peer competence on adaptation to school life, multiple regression analyses were conducted. To examine whether emotional regulation and children's peer competence as a mediating variable in the process that parents' attachment is influencing children's adaptation to school life, hierarchical regression analyses were performed.
The result of this research is as follows.
First, the analysis of the relationship of parents' attachment, emotional regulation and children's peer competence with adaptation to school life shows that there is a significant positive correlation between parents' attachment, emotional regulation and children's peer competence and adaptation to school life
Second, as for the effects of fatherly attachment, motherly attachment, emotional regulation and children's peer competence on adaptation to school life, it has been shown that emotional regulation, children's peer competence and fatherly attachment, in descending order, have a significant effect on adaptation to school life, and the higher the emotional regulation and children's peer competence is, the better can children adapt themselves to school life.
Third, the analysis on the mediating effects of emotional regulation and children's peer competence in the relationship of parents' attachment and adaptation showed that emotional regulation and children's peer competence partially mediates the relationship of attachment with adaptation to school life
As we see the results above, well balanced parents' attachment makes the children enhance their satisfaction level with school on accout of understanding their self-emotion as well as others in each situation. This also exerts favorable influences upon the relationship among the students of the age so that the children have initiative and grow pro-social leaders. Especially, as a factor that has the most influence on the students' adaption to their school lives, the emotion control capability of children is regarded. That gives emphasis to the teachers and parents; the instructors help students to be surrounded emotionally stable environment which makes students properly adapt themselves to their school lives and the students show their feeling or thought in the affirmative. Thus a diverse emotion control reinforcement program development and its adaptability is demanded for the whole man education.
