School violence is one of the most serious problems faced by Korean students. As this problem becomes worse in recent days, many researchers have tried to find out the exact figures of students victimized by school violence and the reasons for why students are involved in such mind-hurting activities. Figures of students victimized are variously estimated by different researchers. However, it is generally agreed that at least half of all students have been the victims of school violence in a given year. Reasons for school violence have been also examined by many researchers. External influences such as weak ties to parents, poor school grade, and influence by delinquent peers have been often reported as the primary reasons by existing studies. A neglected area in the existing studies is the self-generating mechanism leading to school violence.
The purposes of this study are to examine the reasons of school violence by considering both external influences and self-generating mechanism and to develop more appropriate techniques to deal with this problem.
It is not easy to define the concept of school violence in a way that everyone agree on. School violence in this study refers to "any actions which aim to inflict physical injury or psychological harm by a student on a person who is motivated to avoid it through the use of force, aggression, verbal assaults, symbolic․psychological constraints or collective harassment"
A research hypothesis has been derived from literature review. So far the occurrence of violence has been explained by four major perspectives: psychodynamics, learning, social control, social and strain Samples were chosen by a proportional sampling method in the city of Icheon-si and Yeoju-gun . Data were collected by structured questionnaires, which were distributed and self-administered by each sampled student. A total of 265 questionnaires were used in this study. In the other hands, there utilized descriptive statistics, t-test, correlational analysis and multiple-regression analysis as statistical assess methods.
School violence in this study were measured into six types such as threatening type, harassing type, constraining type, injury type, predatory type, and sex-offense type.
The finding of this study was as follows:
from the analysis of school violence factor, there were significant influences on school violence behavior by family's stability at the aspect of domestic factor, by peer's moral turpitude, and their school work at the aspect of school environmental factor.
The implications for the intervention were discussed.
