The purpose of this study is to find out the influence that affects stress coping behaviors related to the various demographic variables. Then I attempt to discover what raising attitude parents need to have in order to bring up their children who have high self esteem and wise stress coping behaviors.
In order to carry out the study, the survey was conducted with 147 boys and 162 girls who were in fifth and sixth grade at elementary school located in Bucheon, Kyunggi Province. I used the questionnaire that Kim Ki-Jeong(1984) created theoretically based on the terms of the relationship associated with the enhancement of self-concept and psychological damage in order to measure parents’ attitude that child perceives. For self-esteem, I used the questionnaire by Song Ki-Hyun(2005) who modified and supplemented ‘Self-esteem measurement’ which was created by Choi Bo-Ga and Jeon Gwi-Yoeon(1993) referring Coopersmith(1967)’s study. Lastly, to study stress coping behaviors, I employed the questionnaire by Shin Jea-Sun(2000) who improved daily stress coping behaviorsmeasurement which was developed by Min Ha-Young and Yu Ahn-Jin(1998). I used SPSS12.0 statistic program for AVONA variance analysis, Pearson’s correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis.
The results of the study presents as follows
First, it turns out that gender, socio-economic status and mother's raising attitude affect meaningfully on self-esteem. Girls show higher social self-esteem and school selfesteem than boys. Also, the higher socio-economic status they have, the higher self-esteem they show, and the more receptive attitude their parents have, the higher self-esteem emerges. Especially, it shows that mother's raising attitude has beneficial effect on the entire subordinate area of self-esteem.
Second, it seems that gender, grades, and parents' raising attitude influence child's stress coping behaviors. In terms of grade, fifth graders have more meaningful influence on aggressive coping behaviors than sixth graders. In the light of gender, girls show more passive coping behaviors. It’s because their parents’ raising attitude, which parents want their daughters to be more feminine, reflects on them. The more receptive and self-regulating the parents raising attitude that children perceive is, the more adaptive stress coping behaviors children show. Children show maladaptive coping as their parents are rejective and regulative as well as they expect less on children’s accomplishment.
Third, as parents’raising attitude gets more receptive and self-regulative, child’s self-esteem becomes higher and children show more active coping behaviors as well as the coping behaviors to seek the social support. When parents have rejective-controlled raising attitude, children appear to have aggressive coping behaviors. Furthermore, pressure to success lowers children’s family self-esteem and school self-esteem. Especially, it seems that family self-esteem and school self-esteem have high negative relation with aggressive coping behaviors. It means that children use aggression as adefense mechanism when children have stressful situations like they have less confidence or they are not accepted in school where they spend lots of time with their peer group.
Fourth, child’s stress coping behaviors are influenced meaningfully by gender, father’s raising attitude, and self-esteem. Father’s raising attitude, general self-esteem, and family self-esteem have the positive effect on adaptive coping behaviors. Child’s gender has the positive influence on maladaptive coping behaviors and school self-esteem has the negative influence on coping behaviors.
In conclusion, I suggest that there is close relationship between child’s stress coping behaviors and gender, grade, socio-economic status, and parents’ raising attitude. Moreover, mother’s raising attitude has definite impact on elementary school children who needs lots of cares from their parents. Lastly, as parents’ raising attitude related to self-esteem influences on stress coping behaviors, having high self-esteem makes children show active and the coping behaviors to seek the social support.
