This study is based upon the cognitive behavior therapy(CBT) that focuses on the metacognition, in which the metacognitive control strategy used for monitoring, regulating and controlling an individual's anxiety or unwanted and unpleasant thinking may cause or maintain emotional problem. Based on the above theory, this study identified the differences of the definitive characteristics, flow and career attitude maturity related to the emotional problem of metacognitive dimension between the gifted and the general middle school students and explored the influence of the metacognitive control strategy and flow for each student type upon the career attitude maturity. This study aims to improve the career attitude maturity of the gifted middle school students by identifying the relation between the flow and career attitude maturity which make students feel pleasant as well as competent by themselves as currently suggested methods.
For this study purpose, research questions were proposed as followed :
1 : Is there any difference in the metacognitive strategy, flow and career attitude maturity between the gifted and the general middle school students?
2 : What relations do the metacognitive strategy, flow and career attitude maturity of the gifted and the general middle school students have with each other?
3 : Is there any influence of the metacognitive strategy, flow of the gifted and the general middle school students upon the career attitude maturity?
The survey data was collected from 140 respondents who were the gifted middle school students and belonged to science high schools located in Seoul and Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education and 219 respondents who were the general middle school students in Seoul. Research tools include metacognitive control strategy inventory, flow experience inventory and career attitude maturity inventory. For the analysis of collected data, the calculation of Cronbach's alpha for the measurement method, t-test, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used.
As a result, the following conclusions were drawn.
First, the gifted students demonstrated more difference in the reevaluation focused on questions and flow in the metacognitive control strategy than the general students. The general students showed more difference in the negative emotion control strategy and the career attitude maturity in the metacognitive control strategy than the gifted students.
Second, there was a positive correlation between the sub-factors of the metacognitive control strategy of the gifted students. There was a positive correlation between the negative cognitive control strategy in the metacognitive strategy of the gifted students and flow, but there was a negative correlation between the mind change and career attitude maturity. In addition, a negative correlation was found between the flow and career attitude maturity.
A positive correlation was generally found between the sub-factors of the metacognitive control strategy of the general students. Generally, there was a positive correlation between the metacognitive control strategy and flow of the general students. A negative correlation was found between the mind change in the metacognitive strategy of the general students and the career attitude maturity. The negative emotion control strategy and negative social control strategy presented a positive correlation with the career attitude maturity. The flow of the general students had a negative correlation with the career attitude maturity.
Third, the flow of the gifted students showed a significant negative influence on the career attitude maturity. The alternative methods of treating anxiety in the metacognitive strategy of the general students had a significant positive influence on the career attitude maturity, while the mind change had a significant negative influence upon the career attitude maturity. The flow showed a significant negative influence on the career attitude maturity.
All results of metacognitive control strategy, flow and career attitude maturity demonstrated appropriate validity and reliability.
These results identified that the gifted middle school students had more positive definitive characteristics in the emotional problem of metacognitive dimension than the general middle school students. They had an association with the flow experience of major class which provided students with a pleasant and competent feeling. However, the metacognitive strategy of gifted students did not improve the career attitude maturity. Meanwhile, the flow experience of major class decreases the career attitude maturity. Even though similar studies are found, this study is the first attempt to compare the influences of the gifted and the general middle school students upon the career attitude maturity. This fact indicates that the definitive quality of Korean gifted students have more excellent definitive quality than the general students. However, it is shown that this result reflects the current unsatisfactory reality of the career guidance and counselling for the gifted students in South Korea. It implies that further efforts should be made to develop the counselling program and career guidance in consideration of the definitive quality as well as flow experience.
. The general students are able to improve the career attitude maturity using a strategy which controls such a thinking by thinking of other worries when they have worries or unwanted and unpleasant thought. However, it was found that a lot of attention was required to manage the emotional problems caused by the excessive negative emotion control strategy. Further research is needed on emotional problem and emotional intelligence as well as counselling program.
