The goal of this study is to understand how creativity influence innovative behavior, and to investigate the moderating role of job characteristic as situational variable on the relationship between creativity and innovative behavior.
Creativity and innovative behavior were examined as individual-level variables in this study. Creativity was composed of two variables: expertise and creative thinking-skills, and job characteristic was composed of five variables: skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback.
To accomplish this study, the data were collected from 385 employees in 23 different organizations and 379 employees provided complete surveys, representing a response rate of 98 percent.
The frequency analysis, reliability analysis, factor analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and moderate regression analysis were used for the statistical methods.
The major findings of this study are summarized as follows: First, the components of creativity(expertise and creative-thinking skills) have a significant effect on innovative behavior.
Second, job characteristic(task significance, autonomy, and feedback) has a partial moderating effect on the relationship between creativity and innovative behavior. However, the direction of moderation effect is changeable depend on the mixes of the variables. In other words, the results indicated that feedback positively moderated the relationship between expertise and innovative behavior. Task significance also positively moderated the relationship between creative-thinking skills and innovative behavior. On the other hand feedback negatively moderated the relationship between creativity and innovative behavior. Autonomy also negatively moderated the relationship between expertise and innovative behavior.
It is clear that we live in the new paradigm of change and transformation, and as the results of this study show that creativity plays an important role in innovative behavior. Also job characteristic can be promoters or inhibitors in the relationship between creativity and innovative behavior.
