The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of resilience on the relation between adult attachment and depression using structural equational modeling.
The presumption of this study is that the one mediator, resilience serves as inhibiting factor for depression and adult attachment that involves anxiety attachment and avoidant attachment. The study follows through on this assumption in its development of two theoretical models explaining the depression. In the first model(model 1), mediating effects of resilience on the relation between anxiety attachment and depression; in the second model(model 2), mediating effects of resilience on the relation between avoidant attachment and depression. Further, the study set out to analyze the different characteristics of the two models above, and to clarify the significance and relative weight of the one mediating effects, aiming to identify the more correct and simpler model, explaining the relation between adult attachment and depression.
For this purpose, a sample of 364 college students(male : 184, female : 180) were asked to complete the ECR-R, BDI, Resilience Scale.
In analyzing data, this study employed statistical terms and methods such as descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, Cronbach's alpha and the Structural Equation Model(SEM), SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 7.0 program. In clarifying the significance of mediation effects, the Sobel test was used.
Data was analyzed using SEM to explore the mediating effects of resilience on the relation between adult attachment(anxiety attachment, avoidant attachment) and depression.
Structural equation modeling analyses fully supported meditating effects of resilience between adult attachment and depression. In the first model, the negative effects of anxiety attachment appeared statistically significant on resilience. The positive effects of anxiety attachment appeared statistically significant on depression while the negative effects of resilience appeared statistically significant on depression. Further, the mediating effects of resilience appeared statistically significant between anxiety attachment and depression. This finding confirms the hypothesis of the study in showing that anxiety attachment arises low resilience and low resilience causes high depression. In the second model, the negative effects of avoidant attachment appeared statistically significant on resilience. The negative effects of resilience appeared statistically significant on depression while the positive effects of avoidant attachment appeared statistically significant on depression. Further, the mediating effects of resilience appeared statistically significant between avoidant attachment and depression. This finding confirms the hypothesis of the study in showing that avoidant attachment arises low resilience and low resilience causes high depression.
The significance of this study lies in this claim that resilience may serve to mitigate the effect of adult attachment on depression.
On the basis of the results of the current study, implications for the counseling and suggestions for future study were discussed.
