The present study is to identify psychosocial factors affecting recovery from alcoholism; to analyze the extent to which those factors influence the recovery process; and to establish proper intervention methods promoting recovery among alcoholics. For those objectives, 180 alcoholic subjects were selected in 2 counseling centers for alcoholics and 7 mental hospitals located in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions and from the attendants of Daegu AA meeting to collect data for analysis, which found the following:
First, in terms of general characteristics of subjects, employment status and academic background of alcoholics showed statistically significant differences relevant to recovery, whereas gender and religion did not.
Second, recovery of alcoholics and their abilities to adjust self-esteem showed the highest correlation, followed by social and emotional supports, which was statistically significant.
Third, as for the psychosocial factors influencing the recovery from alcoholism, the ability to control self-esteem, positive self-image area and academic background were found to have influence on recovery, which was statistically significant. Concerning the relative impacts on recovery, the ability to control self-esteem had the strongest impact on recovery followed by positive self-image area and academic background.
In summary, these findings suggest that recovery from alcoholism primarily calls for better ability of alcoholics to control self-esteem, which was found to have the greatest influence on recovery. To improve such an ability, alcoholics need receive a cognitive-behavioral therapy so that their self-efficacy can increase.
As the primary factor related to the recovery from alcoholism, self-esteem needs studying continuously and systematically based on diverse influences of self-esteem on the recovery from alcoholism to contribute to better recovery.
