This study analyzes the influence of activities related to the appreciation of famous paintings on children's art abilities. While the experimental group employed in this study consisted of 30 four year-old children from one class of the S Kindergarten located in M City, the control group consisted of 30 four year-old children from the other class at S Kindergarten. Although reference was made to the Children’'s Developmental Stages in Art developed by Schirmacher(1993), Educating Artistic Vision by Eisner (1972), and Teaching Art to Young Children by Barnes (2002), the researcher used a reorganized version of the model developed by Jeong Mi-gyeong (1999).
This study found that the artistic expression and appreciation abilities of the children who participated in the activities related to the appreciation of famous paintings improved more than those of the children in the control group.
Based on the results of this study, the following suggestions can be introduced where future studies are concerned. There is an urgent need to conduct long-term studies designed to verify the effects of art activities related to the appreciation of famous paintings on large numbers of children of various age groups. Moreover, these studies should take into consideration the regional, social, and organizational characteristics of the relevant educational contents. In addition, it would be advantageous to conduct studies that involved a variety of art works and art activities that reflect the children's ages. Lastly. it is essential that more precise and standardized assessment tools be developed.
