The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the Integrated Music Appreciation Activities on the musical creativeness and the emotion of children. The following agenda were selected for the purpose of the study.
First, what are the effects of the Integrated Music Appreciation Activities on the musical creativeness of children?
Second, what are the effects of the Integrated Music Appreciation Activities on the emotional capabilities of children?
To identify the effects of the Integrated Music Appreciation Activities on the musical creativeness and the emotion of children, five‐year‐old children in J Private Kindergarten in Y City in Jeollanam‐do were given Integrated Music Appreciation Activities twenty times. The tool to measure the musical creativeness of children was reconfigured version of MCSM (Measures of Creativity in Sound and Music) which was developed by Wang (1981) and translated by Heo Soon‐hee (1996). To measure the emotional capabilities of the children, Emotional Capability Test Tool, which was developed by Lee Byeong‐rae (1997) as EQ Check List (for 5year‐old children) and then reconfigured by Im Myeong‐hee (2003).
To check the homogeneity of the two groups (experimental and control) before executing the Integrated Music Appreciation Activities, t‐test was executed on the scores from the pre‐test of Musical Creativeness and Emotional Capabilities of Children. After the execution of the Integrated Music Appreciation Activities inter group independent t‐test was executed to find out the difference in score between two groups. For the factors showing the difference between groups in the pre‐test, covariate analysis was performed.
The followings are the summary of the results of the study. First, the experimental group showed higher score in the musical creativeness than the control group. The musical creativeness can be enhanced by developing and educating the multi‐faceted musical characteristics. As it is the element that can be educated and improved, we need to search for the possibility to enhance it. The musical context should be considered important so that the learner can make a creative chievement.
In this context, teachers should provide opportunities for the children to test various sounds and let them express in various ways after listening to music. They should integrate it into the other musical activities, letting them experience the elements and principles of music. They should utilize various play methods and appreciation media by selecting the numbers matching with the interest, development stage and internal desire of the children.
Second, the experimental group showed higher score in the emotional capabilities than the control group. Institutions should configure the program to enhance their emotional capabilities naturally through various educational activities such as literature, art, physical activities, music and play. If these activities are performed in an integrated way, they will be able to perceive their emotions better and their emotional capabilities will be enhanced accordingly. Therefore, music appreciation activities should be performed in an integrated way within the theme of life as well as providing the concepts and skills in n integrated way in each area (Gang Sin‐young, 2007).
Based on the results of the study, following proposals are made. First, it should be applied to the institutions in various areas and the further studies analyzing the result should be followed. Second, further studies regarding the changes in these capabilities should be made through the long‐term application. Third, as the music appreciation activities can have different effects according to the role of the teacher, we need to provide them training and research opportunities. Fourth, to apply the integrated music appreciation activities to the filed we need to develop and
distribute more concrete and more systematic appreciation activities.
