Although it is established that integrated musical activities have musical value in children, the studies regarding its educational effects have not been made sufficiently. Accordingly, this article tried to identify the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program’s effects on the musical capabilities and the musical creativeness of children by performing an integrated rhythm instrument teaching program, and to provide basic materials for the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program in Child Education Institutes. The following agenda were set to achieve the aforementioned study purpose.
First, what are the effects of the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program on the musical capabilities of children?
Second, what are the effects of the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program on the musical creativeness of children?
To research the aforementioned issues, 40 5‐year‐old children in two kindergartens located in City Y. Twenty children in Kindergarten K were set as experimental group and twenty children in Kindergarten J were set as control group. The study is composed of pre‐test, experiments for 8 weeks, and post‐test procedures. Experiments were executed two to three times a week for 8 weeks (20 times in total) from March 4 to April 30 in 2010. Music lessons of the experimental group were performed according to the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program while control group did not receive the lessons according to the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program.
To measure the musical capabilities of children, we reconfigured PMMA (The Primary Measures of Music Audition) which was developed by Gordon in 1979 and then translated and adapted by Helen Lee (2004) and used it to measure the musical capabilities of children. To measure the musical creativeness of children, MCSM(Measures of Creativity in sound and Music) developed by Wang (1981) and translated and adapted by Heo Mun‐hi (1996) was reconfigured according to the purpose of this study. The materials collected from the study were analyzed using SPSS(Statistical Package for the social Science). Followings are the results of the study.
First, it was confirmed that the experimental group who had the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program showed statistically significant value in musical capabilities than the control group. Thus it seems that the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program made positive influence on the development of the musical capabilities of the children.
Second, it was confirmed that the experimental group who had the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program showed statistically significant value in musical creativeness than the control group. The experimental group showed higher value in all the sub factors of the musical creativeness such as ‘Fluency’, ‘Imagination’ and ‘Originality’. Thus it seems that the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program made positive influence on the development of the musical creativeness of the children.
Based on the results, it is confirmed that the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program made positive effects on the musical capabilities and the musical creativeness of children. This result suggests that the integrated rhythm instrument teaching program can be an effective teaching‐learning method to improve and the musical creativeness of children.
