The objective of this study is to prove influences of a play therapist's ego-resilience and interpersonal relation orientations on the psychological burnout.
The subjects of this study were 117 play therapists who were engaging in play therapy. The measuring instruments were the following: self-reporting questionnaires to find out the play therapists' technical characteristics, the scales of Psychological Burnout of Play Therapists(Park Heehyun, Kim Kwangwoong, 2005), Interpersonal Relation Orientations (Leary, 1957), and the Ego-Resilience Inventory (Klohnen, 1996) were used for the research.
The collected data was implemented to practice Pearson's correlation analysis of the variables using the statistics program, SPSS 12.0, to calculate Cronbach's alpha coefficient to verify the credibility of each scale, and to carry out multiple regression analysis and hierarchical regression analysis to explore influences of each sub-factor.
The summary of the study is as follows.
Firstly, a play therapist's ego-resilience has meaningful influences on the psychological burnout. That is, it has turned out that as a play therapist's interpersonal relation efficiency gets higher and shows a more optimistic attitude, the emotional exhaustion becomes lower. The higher the confidence level and interpersonal relation efficiency is, the lower the negative attitude towards counseling is. Also, it has demonstrated that when a play therapist's interpersonal relation efficiency is high and the anger is well managed, the transference level to the negative interpersonal relation becomes lower. When a play therapist shows an optimistic attitude and well manages anger, the somatizying symptom level becomes lower.
Secondly, as this study researched what influences a play therapist's interpersonal relation orientations has on the psychological burnout, it has revealed that the lower sympathetic-receptive orientations and defiant-distrustful orientations are, the lower emotional exhaustion is. The higher ostentatious-narcissistic orientations and the lower defiant-distrustful orientations are, the lower occupational doubt is. As independent-responsible orientations and defiant-distrustful orientations are lower, it is less likely to have a negative impact in counseling. As dominant- controlling orientations are higher and defiant-distrustful orientations are lower, the transference level to the negative interpersonal relation is lower. When sociable- friendly orientations and competitive-aggressive orientations are higher and defiant-distrustful orientations are lower, the somatizying symptom level is lower.
Thirdly, regarding hierarchical influences of a play therapist's ego-resilience, interpersonal relation orientations, and the psychological burnout, it has presented that a play therapist's ego-resilience has an influence on the psychological burnout mediated by interpersonal relation orientations. Namely, it suggests that a play therapist's emotional exhaustion has an influence on the burnout by interpersonal relation efficiency and optimistic attitude mediated by a sympathetic-receptive orientation. In addition, it has showed that a play therapist's occupational doubt has an influence on the burnout by confidence mediated by an ostentatious-narcissistic orientation, and the negative attitude on counseling has an influence on the burnout by interpersonal relation efficiency and optimistic attitude mediated by an independent-responsible orientation. It has been found that the transference of a play therapist to the negative interpersonal relation is influenced by interpersonal relation efficiency mediated by a defiant- distrustful orientation, and the somatyzing symptoms are affected by interpersonal relation efficiency and optimistic attitude mediated by sociable-friendly, competitive-aggressive, and defiant- distrustful orientations.
In conclusion, it appears that the psychological burnout increases through ego-resilience and interpersonal relation orientations. Thus, the psychological burnout is affected by interpersonal relation efficiency of ego-resilience and a defiant-distrustful orientation of interpersonal relation orientations. As a result of this research, therefore, this study has a significant meaning as it has offered information on therapists' characteristics and uncovered therapists' intrinsic and extrinsic personal variables through two factors as ego- resilience and interpersonal relation orientations in depth.
