This study looked into the criteria of calculating the size of domestic airports passenger terminal, proposed proper size model, and set up the plan and criteria of applying plan layout elements by the airport sizes, and the results are as follows:
Criteria of calculating proper size for domestic airport passenger terminal are as follows:
First, as criteria of calculating passenger terminal size, break-down method shall be applied.
Second, the elements of size calculation include number of passengers at peak, passenger service level, and area required per passenger at peak.
Models of proper sizes of passenger terminals at domestic and international airports were calculated, and the results are as follows:
First, in case of domestic airports passenger terminal, as a result of calculating proper size of passenger terminal based on domestic passenger demand in 2009, 13 airports except for Jeju airport showed surplus area. Therefore, domestic airports aviation policy should be revised with emphasis on stronghold airports, and stronghold airports by the regions that hold potential of passenger increase should be activated to maximum extent. In addition, in case of airports where continued reduction of future passenger demand is inevitable among regional small airports, active countermeasures like conversion to other aviation related facility purpose need be sought for.
Second, for international airport passenger terminals, proper sizes of passenger terminal were calculated based on the anticipated number of passengers considering the rates of increase and decrease in passengers by the years, and as a result, small stronghold airports showed excessive surplus area relatively compared with large stronghold airports. Therefore, as for the plan for future small stronghold airports passenger terminals, the sizes should be calculated conservatively, securing economic profitability, and then be extended depending on the increase or decrease of passengers demand.
The criteria of plan layout elements application by hub airports, stronghold airports and general airports were arranged, and the results are as follows:
First, the criteria of applying CIQ operation methods are as follows: For hub airports, initial concentrated type CIQ system is applied, and then distributed type CIQ system is applied later on. In addition, for stronghold airports, concentrated type CIQ system is applied, and for general airports, which do not include international line functions, CIQ function is excluded.
Second, passenger circulation system application criteria are as follows: For hub airport, terminal concept of pier type or satellite type and multi-level system are applied, and for stronghold airports, linear type and two-level or one & half-level system are applied. and for general airports, linear type and one-level system are applied.
Third, check-in system application criteria are as follows: For hub airports, spilt type and island type are applied, and for the check-in system of stronghold airports and general airports, centralized type and linear type are applied.
Fourth, criteria of applying security search operation methods are as follows: For hub airports, distributed type or concentrated type are selected and applied by considering the strategic objective, geo-political, political, military and social situations of applicable airport. For stronghold airports and general airports, concentrated type search methods are applied by considering the efficiency of airport operation.
As such, this study examined passenger terminal size calculating elements and criteria, and proposed proper size models. In addition, this study also clarified that airport size and plan layout elements are inter-linked in the procedure of passenger terminal planning, and differences exists in the criteria of applying plan layout elements depending on airport size and nature.
Therefore, the results of this study will serve as basic data for setting up the objective size calculating criteria for passenger terminals and basic planning criteria for efficient plan layout elements in planning extension construction or new construction of airport passenger terminal later on.
