The purpose of this study is to aware the value of mathematical activities by using picture book in educational institution for children and to clarify its effect of young children's measurement ability and mathematical attitude. For this study, 25 young children at 7 years old who attends S and D kindergarten in Seoul has been chosen as experimental group. Mathematical activity using picture book was applied to experimental group and only mathematical activity was applied to comparison group. Moreover, mathematical activities has been proceeded as of 6 or 7 members during 15 sessions in each group.
The measurement of ability for young children has been sorted from the Kim Ji Young's contents in "The development of evaluation tool for young children's ability in Mathematics which based on NCTM's mathematical education standard(2004)". And also, to examine the mathematical attitude, another tools like "Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children" from Harter & Pike's(1984) and Kim Kyung Hee's tool which was adapted from Ward(1993) are used for reference. For method of analyzing data, covariant amount analysis, by making post survey dependent variable and advance survey covariant element, has been operated to find out meaningful difference between the two groups after calculating the average and standard deviation of advance and post surveys' scores of both groups.
Consequently, the data shows that there is significant difference in the mentioned groups and represent the effect of measurement by using picture book regarding mathematical activities. In detail, subordinate factors like length, area, weight, volume and time were consisted of positive result for improvement of measuring capacities. The effect toward children's mathematical attitude had been analyzed by mathematical activity with picture book. As mentioned above, there were remarkable effects on using picture book in the sense of mathematical activities than that of non-using picture book. This consequence could be positive to some subordinate elements in mathematical attitude for example interest, competence, alternative study intention not only in the view of statistical difference.
As a conclusion, the results in this study showed that the mathematical activities using picture book have positive effects on the development to young children's measurement abilities and attitudes toward mathematical activities.
Therefore, it is necessary to provide abundant opportunities in educational institution for children by using many kinds of picture books during the children conduct the mathematics activities using picture book appreciation in kindergarten.
In the future, innovative program which is established on picture book for infant and toddler would be needful. Moreover some additional research like effect study about integrated education of mathematical activities with science, art, music on measurement abilities and mathematical attitude, and the influence of problem-solving ability on measurement and finally, the development of measuring tool should be conducted.
