The purposes of this study were to develop and apply materials to induce learning motivation using mathematical stories and to test their effects on the students' mathematical disposition(mathematical interest and attitude). For those purposes, the investigator developed learning motivation induction materials that could be used for four units(Unit 1, 2, 3 and 5) of nine consisting of the Ga stage study in the sixth grade. The four units corresponded to 23 lessons. The developed materials were the reconstructions of literature and materials on the Internet that were related to mathematical stories and drawn into cartoons for 23 lessons. In applying those stories and cartoons to actual mathematics classes, research themes were set as follows:
First, materials to induce learning motivation are to be developed using mathematical stories. Using the mathematical stories selected from the literature and on the Internet, the materials are reconstructed by taking into account their relations to the curriculum by the units and lessons.
Second, the developed materials are to be applied to mathematical classes and examined to see what kind of effects they would have on the students' mathematical disposition.
The research was conducted with two sixth grade classes in H elementary school in Masan, Gyeongsangnam Province for ten weeks from early March to early May, 2007. The nonequivalent control group pretest-design of quasi-experimental design was employed.
The inventory for mathematical disposition adopted in the study was developed by the Korean Educational Development Institute in 1992 and used by Choi Yun-seok(2004). The results were analyzed with a t-test to examine the changes to the affective domain of the educational goals and the various domains of mathematical disposition.
The findings were as follows:
First, using the materials to induce learning motivation with mathematical stories, cartoons were presented to the students along with mathematical stories like children's stories titled "Fun Mathematical Stories" for 5~10 minutes in the beginning of classes. The results show that the students who learned with the help of the developed learning motivation materials experienced more positive effects on their mathematical disposition than those who didn't.
Second, those who studied with the developed learning motivation materials also experienced more positive impacts in the subareas of mathematical disposition, which included confidence, flexibility, determination, curiosity, reflection, and value, than those who didn't.
In short, the application of the materials to induce learning motivation with mathematical stories allowed the students to undergo positive changes in terms of confidence in mathematics, flexibility to search for other solutions, determination to implement mathematical tasks persistently, curiosity in doing mathematics, tendency to reflect on their thinking and performance results, and value of applying mathematics to other subject experiences and situations and daily ones.
It's apparent, therefore, that materials to induce learning motivation using mathematical stories should be made active use of during mathematical classes.
