The purpose of this study is to unify the two generations of grandmother and children through harmonious activity of storytelling in kindergartens and child care centers.
This study dealt with the following subjects.
First, This study looks into the need of teachers in kindergartens and child care centers and grandmothers for elderly-child interaction program using old stories.
Second, Based on the needs, this study develops elderly-child interaction program using old stories.
The study process to develop elderly-child interaction program using old stories is as follows.
This study collected and analyzed preceding studies and data on elderly-child interaction program. Then, this study created survey questionnaire and interview paper to see the demand for elderly-child interaction program using old stories. After revisions and supplementation of the survey questionnaire, this study conducted a survey to 102 teachers in kindergartens and child care centers in Busan and Pohang area on the demand for the program and interviewed 10 grandmothers in Pohang area. Based on the survey and interview results on elderly-child interaction program using old stories as well as documents and preceding studies, this study developed a program plan including goal, content, and operation of the program. The developed plan went through adequacy verification by early childhood education specialists and revised and supplemented to complete the elderly-child interaction program using old stories.
The study result can be summarized as below.
First, according to the result of the teachers’ demand for the program, 88.2% of the respondents recognized about the program. Among the questions that asked about pre-education of grandmother teachers, the teachers chose 'reading storybooks' and ‘taking a walk together’ as the activities that grandmothers and children can get close. As for the preparation for ‘telling old stories’ activity, the teachers chose ‘how to narrate’ for grandmother teachers. According to the survey result, the teachers think two grandmother teachers are the most appropriate number for the program operation. They want the program to be operated once a week. As for the type of participation, the most number of teachers want the grandmother teachers ‘to spend a half a day and do some activities other than storytelling’. They most preferred 10 students a group and ‘traditional nursery songs’ as a related activity to storytelling. Some of the expected problems from the program were ‘interaction with children’ and ‘unsmooth progress of activities.’ Expected effect of the program was ‘it will be helpful for grandmothers to have joy in life as they get to do volunteer work.’
Second, according to the result of in-depth interview with the grandmothers, the grandmothers have positive opinion on volunteer work of ‘telling old stories’ in kindergartens and child care centers. They want to be provided with narration techniques and know-how as well as short and easy-to-remember stories. As for the expected effect for grandmothers, they think they can be healthier both physically and mentally they get to meet active children regularly and feel proud of themselves as a grandmother teacher. As for the expected effect for children, they think the children will be able to feel affection from grandmothers as they experience various old stories. Some of the expected problems and difficulties are a possibility for children’s to have negative image about grandmothers when they make a mistake during the activities, a worry about consistent participation and their health, and awkward relationship with the teachers.
Third, based on the preceding studies and demand survey, retired professionals and retired teachers are the most appropriate candidates for grandmother teachers. The program should contain not only ‘telling old stories’ but also some stories related to their life and experiences. In addition, the program should focus on how to comprehend old stories through repetitive storytelling. The above results are the core factors for the elderly-child interaction program using old stories. Based on the results, this study developed a program plan for grandmother teachers.
