The enlargement of policewomen’s number and its role in the fields mitigated the old arguments regarding the policewomen’s physical working condition and passiveness and complacency of some policewomen which comes from the physical and spiritual weakness of policewomen, but some policemen still have somewhat passive or negative opinion on the increase of policewomen’s number and the necessity of policewomen.
This kind of conflict can be another cause of weakness in policewomen’s professionalism and also can be a major factor of lowering their work efficiency, in pervious days the conflict was usually derived from poor physical working condition or policewomen’s lack of gender role recognition.
Especially, in the police society where the most valuable virtue in performing its duty is faithfulness, some members’ lack of loyalty might cause negative effect in attaining group’s goal and it might also leads to inefficiency in the whole organization.
So, to overcome these difficulties, policewomen have to have professional identity, i.e. identity, in doing their duties.
This study, for the establishment of policewomen’s professional identity, clarified how the policewomen’s recognition of their efficacy affects to their work attitude.
We carried out a survey of 575 policewomen who is working in the nationwide branch offices. And the result of this analysis using Structural Equation Analysis Modeling, i.e. the relationship among professional identity, self efficacy and work attitude, is as below.
First, according to the result on relationship between professional identity and work attitude, professional identity has a positive effect to the organizational commitment which is a part of work attitude but has partially positive effect to the efficiency.
This means that the most influential subcomponent to the work attitude is policewomen’s sense of vocation.
Second, according to the result on relationship between professional identity and self efficacy, policewomen’s sense of vocation has statistically the most meaningful relations both to the work attitude and to the efficiency of work. So, we can figure out that the sense of vocation is the most important component among identity.
Third, according to the result on relationship between efficiency of work and work attitude, as policewomen’s efficiency of work has positive effect to the work attitude, wholly or partly, we have to regard this as a key factor to be considered for the increase of organizational commitment and job satisfaction.
Especially, as it is proved that group efficiency influences more significantly to the policewomen, we can predict that policewomen’s group efficiency affects significantly to the group performance of policewomen.
Finally, according to the result of this survey that if the efficiency of work is doing a role of parameter between professional identity and work attitude, we can confirm that policewomen’s efficiency has wholly or partly meaningful relations with professional identity and work attitude. This means that policewomen’s identity can affect highly, with the level of efficiency of work, to the organizational commitment and job satisfaction, and vice versa.
This survey shows that the most important factors to be considered for the policewomen as a professional are establishment of identity and efficiency.
On the basis of result of this survey, we recommend a proposal for the improvement of policewomen’s work attitude through establishment of identity and enhancement of efficiency as follow.
Firstly, enhance policewomen’s positive sense of vocation, secondly, provide a professional education to them, thirdly, widen the scope of policewomen’s jobs and lastly, organize ‘special policewomen organization’ to make them something special.
