This research is young children understanding about text structure and feature of the genre of story picture books and information picture books.
Target students in the study are the followings: each 30 kindergarten students at the age 5 and 6 and 31 elementary students at the school age 7 in Dae-Gu in Korea. Total students are 91. Two Picture books are used. One is the story picture book which is called "The Frog Lady". The other is the information-story book which is called "The Frogs". After reading the picture book to children, researchers record and transcribe students' story through the individual interview. In order to find the degree of students' comprehension of the text between two genres, the text structure and feature by 'Kamberelis and Bovin'(1999) is used. Text structure of two genres is rated and textual features are measured by frequency.
Collected materials in the research are analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 program. To recognize text structure between two genres and textual features by age differences, mean and standard deviation are calculated and also one-way MANOVA is performed. The result of the research is as follows.
First of all, according to the difference in mean based on structural features of the genre, text structure score in the story picture book is higher than in the information picture book. Second, the number of sentences spoken by young children in two genres and average frequency to textual features, the story picture book is more frequent than the information picture book. Third, text structure score in the text of two genres is significantly different between age group. Finally, to illustrate the age differences in textual features, in the logical coordinators and textual features among older children is high in the story picture book while the features except registers is high with older children in information picture book. In other words, as young children get older, textual features score is increased.
